Cet ouvrage est publié à l'occasion de l'exposition hommage à Varian Fry présentée au musée Cantini, Marseille, du 13 novembre 2015 au 15 mars 2016. Cet ouvrage, consacré à André Masson, rend hommage au journaliste américain Varian Fry, qui, en 1941 permit à de nombreux artistes et intellectuels de quitter l'Europe et le régime de Vichy pour les Etats-Unis. Sur le chemin de l'exil, André Masson rejoint à Marseille les surréalistes hébergés à la villa Air Bel. Par la suite, en route pour l'Amérique, il retrouve Claude Levi-Strauss, Wifredo Lam et André Breton lors d'une escale de trois semaines à La Martinique. Son exploration de l'île s'avéra être une expérience fondatrice. Antille, titre d'une peinture, d'un dessin et d'un poème, devient alors l'emblème d'une conscience aiguë des forces telluriques du monde, des hommes et de la nature. Arrivé à New Preston, Masson développe une œuvre libre, multiple, qui influencera Pollock et les expressionnistes américains. Surréaliste mais rétif à l'orthodoxie, il investit profondément l'univers mythique de La Martinique et des indiens d'Amérique

The collection includes the original manuscript of "Surrender on Demand", Mr. Fry's account of his wartime experiences, which was later rewritten for young readers as "Assignment Rescue" (New York, Four Winds Press, 1968). Among the correspondents represented in the collection are Marc Chagall, Jacques Lipchitz, Roger Baldwin, Norman Thomas, J. Edgar Hoover, and Herman Wouk. In addition to the material relating to the Emergency Relief Committee (later known as the International Rescue Committee), the collection includes correspondence and papers concerning Fry's work as a writer on foreign affairs as well as copies of his books
