Susan Rothenberg : paintings from the nineties by Cheryl A Brutvan ( Book )
3 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 398 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Overview: Susan Rothenberg first gained critical attention in the mid-seventies when she introduced the simple, outlined image of an animal onto the austere canvas of Minimalism. Since then, her exploration of the formal tenets of painting has been manifested through increasingly complex compositions, rendered in a recognizably gestural style. This combination has in part allowed for the consistent interpretation of the artist's work as being both emotionally intense and a serious contribution to the tradition of heroic painting. Since moving to the Southwest from New York City a decade ago, Rothenberg has created a body of work that is at once a continuation and evolution of previous concerns, and an expression of dramatic changes. Susan Rothenberg: Paintings from the Nineties, published on the occasion of a major exhibit of the artist's works from the past decade, brings together twenty of her most significant recent paintings. As these works have never been shown before as a group, this book provides the first opportunity to consider a crucial period in the career of one of our most important contemporary artists. Along with Rothenberg's haunting, evocative images, reproduced in full color, the volume includes an important critical introduction by Cheryl Brutvan, Beal Curator of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and a poetic response to the artist's paintings by Robert Creeley
Antonio López García by Cheryl A Brutvan ( Book )
5 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 391 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book, published to accompany López's largest North American show to date, offers the first comprehensive overview in English of this extraordinary oeuvre. An essay by Cheryl Brutvan discusses López as a descendant of the great Spanish naturalists (as well as his indebtedness to Surrealism and "magic realism"), while individual appreciations of 45 masterworks spanning his career offer English-speaking readers a rare opportunity to discover in depth the poetry and atmospheric density of this remarkable artist. --Publisher's description
The paintings of Sylvia Plimack Mangold by Cheryl A Brutvan ( Book )
7 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 381 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Plimack Mangold's work has evolved from early renderings of floors, mirrors, and rooms to landscapes (by day and by night), skyscapes, and "portraits" of individual trees done at her outdoor Hudson River valley studio. She reinvented these traditional subjects by wrestling with the very process by which the artist creates illusion, then letting the viewer in on her secret by bordering the image with illusionary "masking tape" (meticulously recreated with paint and brush) that simultaneously acknowledges and denies the painted surface." "This lavishly illustrated, full-color volume is published in conjunction with a retrospective exhibition of Plimack Mangold's paintings organized by the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York, and traveling to Hartford, Houston, and Boston. Covering more than a quarter-century of work, it includes a monographic essay by Cheryl Brutvan, Curator at the Albright-Knox, as well as full documentation of the artist's career to date: Chronology, Selected Bibliography, and Selected Exhibitions and Reviews. It also reproduces a number of pages from the artist's notebooks, providing a rare, privileged glimpse at the thoughtful intelligence and aesthetic beliefs that underlie these magical canvases, canvases that give expression to the intimate reality of the artist's existence, give form to the intangible."--BOOK JACKET

5 editions published in 1987 in English and held by 331 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Sophie Ristelhueber : Details of the world by Sophie Ristelhueber ( Book )
4 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 267 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"How do we distinguish the boundaries - if they exist - between reality and fiction? And how does an artist suggest such discoveries are of consequence? For Sophie Ristelhueber, the greatest truth is found in the "details of the world." Intensely personal and objectively restrained, Ristelhueber embraces the scars of human existence, whether through the image of an undefined landscape crippled by bombing or the peeling wallpaper found in a family home. She transcends the turmoil and specificity of a location and, instead, creates art without limits of time and identity through photographs and installations that are haunting, provocative, and telling." "Details of the World is the most comprehensive anthology of Ristelhueber's career, including a selection from all her major projects and numerous - and previously unpublished - images. Recognized for her own books that poignantly complement her work, she conceived of and designed this volume to accompany the major survey of her career organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. With an informative text by exhibition curator Cheryl Brutvan that examines Ristelhueber's work and obsessions, this is not only the most thorough consideration of one of France's most noteworthy contemporary artists, but also an art object in itself."--BOOK JACKET
