V románě, který je svéživotopisem samotného N. Ostrovského, typisuje v sobě hlavní hrdina Pavel Korčagin nejkrásnější rysy sovětské mládeže, bojující v revoluci a v občanské válce spolu se svými otci za sovětskou moc a budující po jejím vítězství a upevnění socialismu. Korčagin (Ostrovskij) původem z ukrajinské dělnické rodiny, od svých 12 let pracuje 14 až 16 hodin denně, aby pomohl uživit rodinu. Ve Velké říjnové revoluci a v obč. válce nachází rychle a jistě své místo: vstupuje do Komsomolu a organisuje bojové oddíly komunistické mládeže. Po ukončení občanské války obětavě pracuje na výstavbě: staví úzkokolejku a obnovuje železniční dílny. R. 1924 se stává členem komunistické strany a věnuje se intensivní politické práci. Sráží ho však těžká a nevyléčitelná choroba, následek starého zranění a prožitých útrap: ochrne a později také oslepne. Nevzdává se a nepřestává se snažit být své straně a třídě užitečným. Píše a později diktuje románovou epopej svého vlastního života i celé dějinné epochy "Jak se kalila ocel", jejíž smysl vystihuje slovy: "Ocel se zakaluje v prudkém ohni a silném chladu. Tehdy se stává pevnou a nic ji nezlomí. Tak se zakalovala i naše generace v strašlivých zkouškách a učila se nedat se srazit životem."
