V úvodní pov. "Když byl Matěj malý" vypravuje autor o svém dětství v oravské vesnici, "Před zkouškou" o zkušenostech školáka, který poznává rozdíl mezi bohatými a chudými. Ostatní obrázky čerpají z pražského pobytu Kukučínova. Humoreskami ze student. života jsou "Na ľade" a "Slepá kura a zrno", společenské poměry pražské v posl. dvou desítiletích minulého stol. ilustrují s humorem "Malé povídky z velkého města": "Od 3/4 na 8 do 8" a "Po šiestej hodine". Dokumentární je reportáž z čes. sněmu "Dve hodiny medzi zákonodarci"; tragické ladění mají vzpomínky na rozklad rodiny, u které medik Kukučín bydlel, "zápisky zo smutného domu". Náladovým obrázkem "zo študentských časov" je tento výbor autobiografických povídek význačného sloven. spisovatele uzavřen.
