Investigates how women, religion and culture have interacted in the context of 19th and 20th century Iran, covering topics as seemingly diverse as the social and cultural history of Persian cuisine, the work and attitudes of 19th century Christian missionaries, the impact of growing female literacy, and the consequences of developments since 1979
Muhammad Juki's Shahnamah of Firdausi by Barbara Brend( Book )

5 editions published between 2009 and 2010 in English and held by 201 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Shahnamah of Firdausi produced for the Timurid Muhammad Juki (a grandson of Timur) in the 1440s is one of the finest surviving Persian manuscripts produced between the heyday of Baysunghur's academy in Herat and the appearance of Bihzad." "It has thirty-one exquisite miniature paintings depicting scenes from the epic tale and fine illumination on two pages. The manuscript was presented to the Royal Asiatic Society in 1834 by Lt. Col. C.J. Doyle who had probably received it as a parting gift from Lord Hastings on leaving India. It had previously been in the Mughal Imperial Library and bears the seals of the Mughal emperors Babur, Humayun, Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzheb; there is an autograph note by Shah Jahan and further notes reveal its subsequent history." "This monograph written by Dr Barbara Brend is the first complete study of the manuscript and provides a detailed analysis of the cycle of illustrations; a commentary on the Mughal notes by A.H. Morton which offer telling insights into the practices of the Mughal library"--Jacket

2 editions published between 2001 and 2003 in English and held by 105 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is the first major study of provincial history in the Qajar period. Drawing extensively on unpublished Iranian and British documents, it explores the history of Mazandaran, a province in the Caspian region, during 1848-1914, when the province as a part of Iran was exposed to the policies of rival great powers, particularly Tzarist Russia. While showing socio-economic characteristics of Mazandaran and its potential for development, the book examines in detail the transformation of the traditional provincial community and economy in the course of the 19th and early 20th centuries

The rise of the Ottoman Empire : studies in the history of Turkey, 13th-15th centuries by Paul Wittek( Book )

4 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 73 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Wittek's The Rise of the Ottoman Empire was first published by the Royal Asiatic Society in 1938, and has been out of print for more than a quarter of a century. The opportunity has been taken at the present reissue of Wittek's 1937 London lectures to bring together in one volume translations of his other studies on Ottoman history, dating mainly from his Brussels years. This book contains five closely interconnected writings by Wittek on Ottoman history during the century and a half from the founding of the state to the Fall of Constantinople. All but one of these pieces reproduces the texts of lectures or conference papers delivered by Wittek between 1936 and 1938. The journals in which they were originally published are for the most part inaccessible except in specialist libraries, it seems, in a period when Wittek's activities as an Ottoman historian are coming under increasing study within the Anglo-Saxon world of scholarship. An introduction sets Wittek's work in its historical and historiographical context for the benefit of those students not privileged to experience it firsthand, and the book is an interesting contribution to studies on Asian and Middle East history"--
