Sofía es el primer volumen de la serie de cuadros sociales que, copiados del natural de la vida cubana, me propongo ofrecer a la respetable consideración de aquellos que me honren leyéndolos. He titulado Cosas de mi tierra la proyectada serie, porque, en realidad, aquéllas han de constituir el asunto de las trabajas que a Sofía seguirán, Si a ello contribuye la protección que al volumen inaugural dispense el público lector, que, por cierto, ha de ser el colaborador imprescindible en este empeño crítico-social. La serie resultará estrechamente entrelazada; pero esto, respecto de un volumen a otro, no significará continuación por necesidad. Cada tomo será una novela completa, independiente cada abra, sin perjuicio, no obstante, de que los personajes pendientes de solución en una, pasen a desenvolverse en otra, y aun los de relativa importancia en la anterior, lleguen a ser los caracteres más salientes de la composición inmediata. Hecha esta advertencia, a guisa de introducción presento mi primer libro original; y del ilustrado criterio del público dependerá lo restante
