Peter Pran : realizations by Peter C Pran( Book )

8 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 120 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Peter Pran is one of the foremost advocates of the school of Modernity, an era that has been characterized by a world of constantly increasing complexity and an implicit human will to understand this world rationally. In Pran's work one can see the attraction to modern reason and technology, yet one can also recognize the expression of an artistic movement that embraces a poetic quality." "This beautifully presented publication stands as a testament not only to the influence of Modernity, but the work of an internationally acclaimed architect whose designs build on a fragmentary aesthetic of floating, planar elements that seem to deny gravity and blur distinctions between inside and outside space. Pran's use of curved surfaces in closejuxtaposition to orthogonal lines creates considerable tension within and between spaces." "In Pran's works, which are characterized by sweeping lines and movement, curvature acts horizontally as well as vertically, and spatial dynamism becomes comprehensive, without contradicting the fundamental dichotomy of up and down." "Examples of his extraordinary ability to design spaces that are not only rational but also experiment with more complex forms are the New York State Psychiatric Institute, the New York Police Academy, and most recently, the Telenor Headquarters scheme in Norway, and the Sail@Marina Bay in Singapore. The Telenor building alone is proof of Pran's ability to choreograph a multinational design team through a complex process of experimentation, discovery, and execution."--Jacket

Singapore's Orchard Road sits alongside New York's Fifth Avenue and Paris' Champs Elysees in the pantheon of prestigious retail districts. 'The Orchard Road Experience' is much more than simply a lush visual and textual narrative showcasing DP Architects' extensive contribution to the character, growth and personality of the famous Singapore shopping and entertainment precinct. It also explores the concept of retail architectural typology generally, provides a brief contextual history of Singapore from British colonisation onwards, outlines the development and evolution of Orchard Road in particular, and explores some of the world's other famous shopping streets
Miegakuresuru toshi : Edo kara Tōkyō e by Fumihiko Maki( Book )

8 editions published between 1980 and 2018 in 3 languages and held by 38 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Thirty years after the original Japanese edition by Fumihiko Maki and a team from Maki and Associates, an English-language version of this book is finally available. The original was based on a commissioned study on "The Desirable Living Environment" and examined Japanese urban spaces in the context of Tokyo's rapid change and the city's distinctive aesthetic consciousness. In particular, the concern for surface layers, micro-topographies, and small spaces in the metropolis received special focus. With the ever-growing and new global metropolises emerging today, fundamentally different attitudes toward public domains are revealed. It is clear that old ideas no longer apply

Nurturing dreams : collected essays on architecture and the city by Fumihiko Maki( Book )

15 editions published between 2008 and 2016 in English and held by 22 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Born in Tokyo, educated in Japan and the United States, and principal of an internationally acclaimed architectural practice, celebrated architect Fumihiko Maki brings to his writings on architecture a perspective that is both global and uniquely Japanese. Influenced by post-Bauhaus internationalism, sympathetic to the radical urban architectural vision of Team X, and a participant in the avantgarde movement Metabolism, Maki has been at the forefront of his profession. This collection of essays documents the evolution of architectural modernism and Maki's own fifty-year intellectual journey during a critical period of architectural and urban history. Maki's treatment of his two overarching themes - the contemporary city and modernist architecture - demonstrates strong (and sometimes unexpected) linkages between urban theory and architectural practice. After writing about his first encounters with modern architecture and with CIAM and Team X, Maki describes his studies of Collective Form, the relationship between cities and their individual buildings. His influential essay The Japanese City and Inner Space traces characteristics of the Japanese city from the Edo period to contemporary Tokyo; his consideration of Japanese modernism begins with a discussion of the Le Corbusier syndrome in modern Japanese architecture. Images and commentary on three of Maki's own works demonstrate the connection between his writing and his designs. Moving through the successive waves of modernism, postmodernism, neomodernism, and other isms, these essays reflect how several generations of architectural thought and expression have been resolved within one career
