Dreams of calculus : perspectives on mathematics education by Johan Hoffman( Book )

11 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 293 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this well-reasoned and analytical account of the development and culture of mathematics, the authors address the relationship between modern mathematics and mathematical education. Concrete recommendations for much-needed reform of the teaching of mathematics are offered in hopes of stimulating further debate among the community. The book is essential reading for everybody involved in mathematics and science, and mathematics teaching
Baseline climatic and hydrologic relationships for the High Ridge evaluation area by W. B Fowler( Book )

4 editions published in 1979 in English and held by 106 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The study area, called the High Ridge evaluation area, is located in the Blue Mountains 22 km. northwest of Elgin and consists of four watersheds ranging between 24 and 118 hectares in size. The study's purpose is to identify the pretreatment conditions of hydrologic behavior in determining effects of management practices. Data collected: precipitation; snow depth and density; streamflow; air, soil, and water temperatures; and speed and direction of wind
Computational turbulent incompressible flow by Johan Hoffman( Book )

13 editions published between 2006 and 2007 in English and held by 70 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is Volume 4 of the book series of the Body & Soul mathematics education reform program, and presents a unified new approach to computational simulation of turbulentflow starting from the general basis of calculus and linear algebra of Vol 1-3. The book puts the Body & Soul computational finite element methodology in the form of General Galerkin (G2), up against the challenge of computing turbulent solutions of the inviscid Euler equations and the Navier-Stokes equations with small viscosity. The book shows that direct application of G2 without any turbulence or wall modeling, allows reliable computation on a PC of mean value quantities of turbulent flow such as drag and lift. The power of G2 is demonstrated by resolving several classical scientific paradoxes of fluid flow and by uncovering secrets of flying, sailing, racing and ball sports. The book presents new aspects on both mathematics and computation of turbulent flow, and challenges established approaches. The book is directed to a wide audience of computational mathematicians fluid dynamicists and scientists. The G2 solver is available as part the free software project FEniCS at www.fenics.org. The book has a dedicated dynamic web page, including movies from a wide variety of simulations, at www.bodysoulmath.org. The book is focussed on incompressible flow, but opens to compressible flow continued in Vol 5 on thermodynamics. The authors are experts on computational mathematics and technology

Applied mathematics : body and soul by K Eriksson( Book )

11 editions published between 2004 and 2010 in English and held by 20 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Applied Mathematics: Body & Soul is a mathematics education reform project developed at Chalmers University of Technology and includes a series of volumes and software. The program is motivated by the computer revolution opening new possibilities of computational mathematical modeling in mathematics, science and engineering. It consists of a synthesis of Mathematical Analysis (Soul), Numerical Computation (Body) and Application. Volumes I-III present a modern version of Calculus and Linear Algebra, including constructive/numerical techniques and applications intended for undergraduate programs in engineering and science. Further volumes present topics such as Dynamical Systems, Fluid Dynamics, Solid Mechanics and Electro-Magnetics on an advanced undergraduate/graduate level. The authors are leading researchers in Computational Mathematics who have written various successful books

Advanced numerical approximation of nonlinear hyperbolic equations : lectures given at the 2nd session of the Centro Internazionale Matematico Estivo (C.I.M.E.) held in Cetraro, Italy, June 23-28, 1997 by Alfio Quarteroni( Book )

4 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume contains the texts of the four series of lectures presented by B. Cockburn, C. Johnson, C.W. Shu and E. Tadmor at a C.I.M.E. Summer School. It is aimed at providing a comprehensive and up-to-date presentation of numerical methods which are nowadays used to solve nonlinear partial differential equations of hyperbolic type, developing shock discontinuities. The most effective methodologies in the framework of finite elements, finite differences, finite volumes spectral methods and kinetic methods, are addressed, in particular high-order shock capturing techniques, discontinuous Galerkin methods, adaptive techniques based upon a-posteriori error analysis
