En janvier 1953, William Burroughs entreprit une expédition de sept mois dans les jungles d'Amérique du Sud pour y trouver du yage, légendaire plante hallucinogène de l'Amazone. Au-delà d'une étude anthropologique, il en profite pour balayer de son regard satirique les régimes politiques locaux. A partir de ses carnets et des lettres qu'il envoie à Allen Ginsberg, Burroughs compose un récit qui fut dans un premier temps publié dans des magazines. Dans cette nouvelle édition, le professeur Oliver Harris est retourné aux manuscrits d'origine afin de raconter la surprenante genèse du texte et d'établir pour la première fois son importance culturelle dans la quête de cette drogue utilisée par les Indiens. Cette édition comporte également des textes inédits de Burroughs et de Ginsberg, lesquels nous permettent de mieux comprendre les déambulations des deux écrivains dans le monde de l'exploration et de l'écriture.
