Nonlinear programming by

24 editions published between 1970 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 373 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book is a concise, rigorous, yet accessible, account of the fundamentals of constrained optimization theory. Many problems arising in diverse fields such as machine learning, medicine, chemical engineering, structural design, and airline scheduling can be reduced to a constrained optimization problem. This book provides readers with the fundamentals needed to study and solve such problems. Beginning with a chapter on linear inequalities and theorems of the alternative, basics of convex sets and separation theorems are then derived based on these theorems. This is followed by a chapter on convex functions that includes theorems of the alternative for such functions. These results are used in obtaining the saddlepoint optimality conditions of nonlinear programming without differentiability assumptions

This volume constitutes the proceedings of the workshop "Optimierung und Operations Research", held at the Elly Holterhoff Backing Stift (Bad Honnef) of the University of Bonn, October 28, 1977. This conference was devoted to recent advances in the field of mathe matical programming, optimization techniques, and operations research. It was attended by about 50 invited participants. Furthermore many scholars in these areas showed a great interest in this workshop, despite several other conferences and activities on similar topics in the year 1977. The organizers regret that considerations of avail able space for conference activities limited the number of participants. This widespread interest, the high quality of the lectures presented and the active and stimulating discussions at the conference mani fested the breadth of the activity ongoing in the field covered by this workshop and the necessity that this field be cultivated to a greater extent by the scientific community. The workshop was organized by the Institute of Operations Research (Sonderforschungsbereich 21), University of Bonn and was generously sponsored by the Gesellschaft der Freunde und Forderer der Rheinischen FriedrichWilhelmsUniversitat and by IBM Germany. Only through this invaluable support was this workshop possible; for this the editors wish to express their sincere thanks and appreciation. Bonn, December 1977 R. Henn B. Korte W. Applied mathematics and parallel computing : festschrift for Klaus Ritter(
Book
)
4 editions published in 1996 in English and German and held by 113 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This collection of 25 research papers is dedicated to Professor Klaus Ritter of the Technical University of Munich on the occasion of his 60th birthday. The contributions provide a broad spectrum of research in nonlinear optimization problems, including theoretical aspects, automatic differentiation, and practical applications. It is dealt with quadratic optimization and with multiobjective decisionmaking. Further topics are parallelizing of algorithms and their implementation on transputer workstations. Special attention is paid to applications of parallel algorithms in the field of robotics. New results in statistics are also presented

Duality for nonlinear programming in a Banach space by
K Ritter(
Book
)
5 editions published between 1966 and 1967 in English and German and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The duality problem for nonlinear programming is considered in a real Banach space. Using an appropriate generalization of the KuhnTucker Theorem the main results of the finite dimensional duality problem are extended to the infite dimensional case. It is shown that the dual problem of a quadratic infinite dimensional maximization problem can be transformed into a finite minimization problem in a finite dimensional Euclidean space. Potential applications to continuous programming problems and problems of optimal control theory are illustrated by an example. (Author)

Global and superlinear convergence of a class of variable metric methods by
K Ritter(
Book
)
6 editions published in 1979 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This paper considers a class of variable metric methods for unconstrained minimization. Without requiring exact line searches it is shown that, under appropriate assumptions on the function to be minimized, each algorithm in this class converges globally and superlinearly. (Author)

A quasiNewton method for unconstrained minimization problems by
K Ritter(
Book
)
6 editions published in 1975 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A method is described for the minimization of a function F(x) of n variables. Convergence to a stationary point is shown without assumptions on second order derivatives. If the sequence generated by this method has a cluster point in a neighbourhood of which F(x) is twice continuously differentiable and has a positive definite Hessian matrix, then the convergence is superlinear. It is shown that under appropriate assumptions n consecutive search directions are conjugate. No computation of second order derivatives is required

On the Convergence and Rate of Convergence of the Conjugate Gradient Method by
Garth P McCormick(
Book
)
6 editions published between 1970 and 1972 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
For the problem of minimizing an unconstrained function, the Conjugate Gradient Algorithm is shown to be convergent. If the function is uniformly strictly convex the ultimate rate of convergence is shown to be nstep superlinear. If the Hessian matrix is Lipschitz continuous the rate of convergence is shown to be nearly nstep quadratic. Comparison with other known results is given. (Author)

Accelerating Procedures for Methods of Conjugate Directions by
K Ritter(

6 editions published in 1974 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The directions of descent generated by a method of conjugate directions are used to perform special steps which accelerate the rate of convergence of these methods. Independent of the number of variables a 2step superlinearly convergent method can be obtained. (Modified author abstract)
