Gleich Godards erster Film wurde ein Klassiker. "Außer Atem" (1959) mit Jean-Paul Belmondo und Jean Seberg handelte von einem Kleingangster, der einen Polizisten erschießt und später von seiner Freundin an die Polizei verraten wird. Berühmt wurde Belmondos letzter Satz: "Du bist wirklich zum Kotzen", worauf sie in die Kamera blickt und treudoof fragt: "Kotzen? Was ist das?" "Außer Atem" war nicht nur ein Film, der das Lebensgefühl einer Generation spiegelte. Er verstieß gegen jede Regel der damaligen Filmästhetik. Aus langen Gesprächen schnitt Godard einfach Sätze und Satzfetzen heraus, ohne sich um die dadurch entstehenden Bildsprünge (Jump-Cuts) zu scheren. Godard spielte diese Neuerung herunter, als er in seinem Buch "Einführung in eine wahre Geschichte des Kinos" behauptete, sein Film sei einfach zu lang gewesen und er habe auf die Art und Weise schludrig gekürzt. Inhaltlich orientiert sich "Außer Atem" an den Gangster- und Gaunerfilmen Hollywoods; er ist ausdrücklich den Monogram Pictures gewidmet, einer Firma, die in den 40er Jahren auf billig produzierte Reißer spezialisiert war. Jean-Paul Belmondos berühmt gewordene Manierismen (mit dem Daumennagel über die Lippen streichen und so weiter) sind ein deutlicher Verweis auf ebenso manieristische Charaktere wie Bogarts Marlowe oder Sam Spade. Die klerikale deutsche Filmkritik konnte damals mit diesem Film nichts anfangen. [...]
