On custom in the economy by Ekkehart Schlicht( Book )

19 editions published between 1998 and 2007 in English and Chinese and held by 286 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The aim of this work is to re-establish custom in economics arguing that current economic theorizing largely neglects the customary forces that underpin market exchange. Its second aim is to systematically harmonize the motivational significance of custom with institutional theorizing
Isolation and aggregation in economics by Ekkehart Schlicht( Book )

13 editions published between 1985 and 2012 in English and Undetermined and held by 231 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In order to solve a given problem, economic analysis is com pelled to concentrate on the interaction of selected factors while disregarding a multitude of other influences. This book offers a discussion of certain central premises involved here and draws some analytical consequences. The argument is fo cused on process analysis, i.e., on the analysis of economic processes within a given institutional setting, although certain corollaries for institutional analysis are patent. Many colleagues and students have helped me, for many years, to develop the views presented here, and it seems im possible to trace individual influences. Thus I can only ex press my indebtedness in a macro sense. I wish to thank the Westdeutscher Verlag for its kind per mission to use material from my Grundlagen der okonomi schen Analyse. The results of Chap. 4 were presented at the Econometric Society European Meeting in Pisa, 1983. Dr. W.A. MUller from Springer-Verlag has encouraged me to write this book and has been helpful in many ways
Firms, markets and contracts : contributions to neoinstitutional economics by Arnold Picot( Book )

14 editions published between 1996 and 1997 in English and German and held by 174 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The essays on contract theory offer new results centering around the theory of the firm. Issues of ownership, integration, delegation, and finance are analyzed. Further, topics of medical care, the economics of crime, the environment, and international trade are treated from a contracting perspective. The authors are leading young economists who have worked at the "International Summer School on the New Institutional Economics."

Estimating the smoothing parameter in the so-called hodrick-prescott filter by Ekkehart Schlicht( )

5 editions published in 2004 in English and German and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This note gives a fairly complete statistical description of the Hodrick-Prescott Filter (1997), originally proposed by Leser (1961). It builds on an approach to seasonal adjustment suggested by Leser (1963) and Schlicht (1981, 1984). A moments estimator for the smoothing parameter is proposed that is asymptotically equivalent to the maximum-likelihood estimator, has a straightforward intuitive interpretation and is more appropriate for short series than the maximum-likelihood estimator. The method is illustrated by an application and several simulations
Consistency in Organization by Ekkehart Schlicht( )

6 editions published between 2003 and 2011 in English and German and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Internal organization relies heavily on psychological consistency requirements. This thought has been emphasized in modern compensation theory, but has not been extended to organization theory. The perspective sheds new light on several topics in the theory of the firm, like the boundaries of the firm, the importance of fairness concerns within firms, the attenuation of incentives, or the role of routines and incentives. It implies a perceptional theory of the firm that is realistic in the sense advocated by Ronald Coase (1937). -- theory of the firm ; hierarchy ; evolutionary theory of the firm ; perceptional theory of the firm ; consistency ; small numbers ; centralization paradox ; Williamson's puzzle ; compensation ; boundaries of the firm ; fairness ; idiosyncratic exchange ; entitlements ; obligations ; routines ; framing ; Simon ; employment relationship ; fairness ; ownership effect ; skunkworks ; disruptive technologies ; Tayloristic organization ; holistic organization
Hiring standards and market clearing by Ekkehart Schlicht( Book )

8 editions published between 2001 and 2002 in English and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Consider a labour market with heterogeneous workers. Firms recruit workers by fixing a hiring standard and a wage offer simultaneously. A more demanding hiring standard necessitates a better wage offer in order to attract enough qualified applicants. As a result, an efficiency wage effect is obtained. An equilibrium emerges which does not clear the labour market. The wage level depends on structural characteristics of labour supply, such as heterogeneity and mobility of the workers. The model is contrasted with prevailing efficiency wage theories, and policy implications are also discussed
Social evolution, corporate culture, and exploitation by Ekkehart Schlicht( Book )

8 editions published between 2001 and 2002 in English and held by 17 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

It has been claimed that the market fosters selfishness and thereby undermines the moral basis of society. This thesis has been developed with an emphasis on market exchange. Everyday life is, however, predominantly shaped by interactions in the workplace rather than by shopping behaviour. This essay places emphasis on firm organisation, rather than market interaction, in moulding cultural traits. The argument starts with the observation that workers may perceive the employment relationship in two different ways, with different behavioural consequences. The first is the conventional incentive view. The other is the social exchange view. Implementing the social exchange perspective may be profitable for firms which organize complex tasks. This requires an appropriate corporate culture, governed by reciprocity, fairness and commitment. Such a culture can be viewed as a refined form of exploitation, however, as it involves creating an atmosphere of mutuality for profit. I shall argue against this thesis that the same attribution mechanisms which render corporate culture an effective management instrument shape the self-perception of management and engender true, rather than faked, social exchange. The market shapes firm organizations which foster mutualism rather than selfishness
