Clarice Beckett lived and worked modestly, without conventional ambition. This lack of prominence gave her complete freedom in her art. The small, modest views of Melbourne she produced were something of a puzzle to many of her contemporaries, who were more familiar with either the large, lively boulevard pictures of the French Impressionists, or the golden bush landscapes of her fellow Australians. Later viewers have come to understand and appreciate the profound sense of stillness that Beckett captured in these meditative, understated pictures, even when they show, as this one does, the bustle of one of Melbourne's main thoroughfares
