Hamiltonian dynamics theory and applications lectures given at the C.I.M.E.-E.M.S. summer school held in Cetraro, Italy, July 1-10, 1999 by Antonio Giorgilli ( )
12 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and German and held by 566 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This volume collects three series of lectures on applications of the theory of Hamiltonian systems, contributed by some of the specialists in the field. The aim is to give the state of the art for some interesting problems, such as the Hamiltonian theory for infinite dimensional Hamiltonian systems, including KAM theory, the recent extensions of the theory of adiabatic invariants and the phenomena related to stability over exponentially long times of Nekhoroshev's theory. The books may serve as an excellent basis for young researchers, who will find here a complete and accurate exposition of recent original results and many hints for further investigation. TOC:A. Giorgilli: Preface.- G. Benettin: Physical Applications of Nekhoroshev Theorem and Exponential Estimates.- J. Henrard: The Adiabatic Invariant Theory and Applications.- S. Kuksin: Lectures on Hamiltonian Methods in Nonlinear PDEs

Hyperbolic systems of balance laws lectures given at the C.I.M.E. Summer School held in Cetraro, Italy, July 14-21, 2003 by Alberto Bressan ( )
9 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 546 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The present Cime volume includes 4 lecture courses by Bressan, Serre, Zumbrun and Williams and a Tutorial by Bressan on the Center Manifold Theorem. Bressan??'s notes start with an extensive review of hyperbolic conservation laws. Then he introduces the vanishing viscosity approach and explains clearly the building blocks of the theory in particular the crucial role of the decomposition by travelling waves. Serre focuses on existence and stability for discrete shock profiles, he reviews the existence both in the rational than in the irrational cases and gives a concise introduction to the use

Inverse problems and imaging lectures given at the C.I.M.E. Summer School held in Martina Franca, Italy, September 15-21, 2002 by A Carpio ( )
5 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 491 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Nowadays we are facing numerous and important imaging problems: nondestructive testing of materials, monitoring of industrial processes, enhancement of oil production by efficient reservoir characterization, emerging developments in noninvasive imaging techniques for medical purposes - computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), X-ray and ultrasound tomography, etc. In the CIME Summer School on Imaging (Martina Franca, Italy 2002), leading experts in mathematical techniques and applications presented broad and useful introductions for non-experts and practitioners alike to many aspects of this exciting field. The volume contains part of the above lectures completed and updated by additional contributions on other related topics."--BOOK JACKET

Financial mathematics : lectures given at the 3rd session of the Centro Internazionale Matematico Estivo (C.I.M.E.) held in Bressanone, Italy, July 8-13, 1996 by Centro internazionale matematico estivo ( Book )
9 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 439 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Financial Mathematics is an exciting, emerging field of application. The five sets of course notes in this book provide a bird's eye view of the current "state of the art" and directions of research. For graduate students it will therefore serve as an introduction to the field while reseachers will find it a compact source of reference. The reader is expected to have a good knowledge of the basic mathematical tools corresponding to an introductory graduate level, and sufficient familiarity with probabilistic methods, in particular stochastic analysis. Platek: Making Computers Safe for the World. An Introduction to Proofs of Programs. Part I. - G.E. Sacks: Prolog Programming.- A. Scedrov: A Guide to Polymorphic Types

7 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 396 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The volume contains the texts of four courses, given by the authors at a summer school that sought to present the state of the art in the growing field of topological methods in the theory of o.d.e. (in finite and infinitedimension), and to provide a forum for discussion of the wide variety of mathematical tools which are involved. The topics covered range from the extensions of the Lefschetz fixed point and the fixed point index on ANR's, to the theory of parity of one-parameter families of Fredholm operators, and from the theory of coincidence degree for mappings on Banach spaces to homotopy methods for continuation principles. CONTENTS: P. Fitzpatrick: The parity as an invariant for detecting bifurcation of the zeroes of one parameter families of nonlinear Fredholm maps.- M. Martelli: Continuation principles and boundary value problems.- J. Mawhin: Topological degree and boundary value problems for nonlinear differential equations.- R.D. Nussbaum: The fixed point index and fixed point theorems
