African art by Michel Leiris( Book )

42 editions published between 1967 and 1968 in 5 languages and held by 1,191 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Our knowledge of the arts of Africa, and of the circumstances in which they have been practised, is still very incomplete. Created over a period of several millennia in a vast range of techniques and materials, and extending to every field of human activity, African artefacts are newaly all essentially functional, but at the same time they can stand as pure works of art in their own right. The great dance masks of the secret societies, the carved ancestor figures, the beautiful bronze heads from Benin and the terracottas from Ife, the steatite bird-man from Zimbabwe - all these have a precise magico-religious function which in no way impairs their aesthetic value. In this book the authors have provided a detailed historical and aesthetic study fo the rich and varied panorama of African art. The first part of the book sets in context the historical relationship between the African and Western cultures, the aesthetic outlook of the African peoples and the place of Africa in the history of art generally. The second and third parts form a detailed account of the arts of Africa, considered first according to category, and then region by region."--Amazon

11 editions published between 2004 and 2008 in French and English and held by 252 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In the autumn of 1924, just before Andre Breton published the Manifeste du surrealisme, two young men met in Paris for the first time. Georges Bataille, 27, starting work at the Bibliotheque Nationale; Michel Leiris, 23, beginning his studies in ethnology. Within a few months they were both members of the Surrealist group although their adherence to Surrealism (unlike their affinities with it) would not last long: in 1930, they were among the signatories of 'Un cadavre', the famous tract against Breton, the 'Machiavelli of Montmartre', as Leiris put it. But their friendship would endure for more than 30 years, and their correspondence, assembled here for the first time in English, would continue until the death of Bataille in 1962." "Including a number of short essays by each of them on aspects of the other's work, and excerpts on Baraille from Leiris' diaries, this collection of their correspondence throws new light on two of Surrealism's most radical dissidents."--BOOK JACKET

Alberto Giacometti by Reinhold Hohl( Book )

6 editions published between 1964 and 1971 in English and German and held by 223 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the Blurb: One of the great masters of 20th century art, the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti captured the existential loneliness of modern humanity with his spindly, attenuated figures whose life-like gazes pierce the vastness of space. Uniting more than 250 sculptures, paintings, drawings and graphic works, this extensive monograph is an exemplary overview of his oeuvre. The book underscores the continuity between the two remarkable bodies of work that characterize his career: the pre-1935 works, which included the finest of all Surrealist sculptures, and the post-war masterpieces. As a result of a profound artistic crisis that began in 1934, when Giacometti returned to working from the model and thus broke with the Surrealists, the artist began tackling the problem of situating figures in space in an entirely new way. Painting played a key role in the solutions that Giacometti found to this problem, and the discussion here of the relationship between his two- and three- dimensional works reveals him to have been as great a painter as he was a sculptor
