Greeley was a newspaper editor, reformer, and politician. He used his position at the New York Tribune newspaper to promote the Republican and Whig parties. He was involved in almost every political and social issue of his era. His editorial, "The Prayer of Twenty Millions" (Aug. 20, 1862) advocated an aggressive attack on the Confederacy and faster emancipation of the slaves. As an agrarian, he supported liberal policies towards settlers: one of his famous phrases was "Go West, young man".
