Barbarian tides : the migration age and the later Roman Empire by Walter A Goffart( Book )

17 editions published between 2006 and 2009 in English and Undetermined and held by 672 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Empire was not swamped by a migratory Germanic flood for the simple reason that there was no single ancient Germanic civilization to be transplanted onto ex-Roman soil. Since the sixteenth century the belief that purposeful Germans existed in parallel with the Romans has been a fixed point in European history. Goffart uncovers the origins of this historical untruth and argues that any projection of a modern Germany out of an ancient one is illusory. Rather, the multiplicity of northern peoples once living on the edges of the Empire participated with the Romans in the larger stirrings of late antiquity. Most relevant among these was the long militarization that gripped late Roman society concurrently with its Christianization."

Historical atlases : the first three hundred years, 1570-1870 by Walter A Goffart( Book )

17 editions published between 2002 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 412 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Beginning in the sixteenth century, and continuing down to the late nineteenth when historical atlases became widely available, Goffart sets out in alternating, paired chapters both milestones in the origins of historical atlases and individual maps illustrating historical scenes. He focuses especially on maps depicting the medieval period, because the development on maps for history hinged particularly on portrayals of this segment of the postclassical, "modern" past. He documents how mapping for history and changing historical understandings of the Middle Ages were closely linked. Goffart concludes the book with a detailed catalogue of historical maps and atlases produced from 1570 to 1870: the catalogue lists more than 700 items from sixty collections around the world, including important, previously unknown maps and atlases that he came across in more than a decade of primary research. Historians of cartography, medievalists, and anyone seriously interested in the role of maps in portraying history will find it invaluable."--Jacket
Barbarians, maps, and historiography : studies on the early medieval West by Walter A Goffart( Book )

9 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 179 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

To complement his first collection of articles (Rome's Fall and After, 1989), Walter Goffart presents here a further set of essays, all but two published between 1988 and 2007. They mainly focus on two types of historiography: early medieval narratives, with special attention to Bede's Historia Ecclesiastica; and printed maps designed to portray and teach history, with special attention to the ubiquitous 'map of the barbarian invasions'. The wide-ranging concerns represented extend from the underside of the Life of St Severinus of Noricum, and further evidence for dating Beowulf, to the questions whether the barbarian invasions period was a 'heroic age' and how Charlemagne shaped his own succession. Attention is also paid to the earliest map illustrating the Anglo-Saxon Heptarchy and to the historical vignettes of the Vatican Galleria delle carte geografiche. The collection opens with the appraisal of certain writings dealing with what is now called 'ethnogenesis theory'. To conclude, Professor Goffart adds brief second thoughts about each of these essays and supplies an annotated list of his articles that have not been reprinted
Expropriations et confiscations dans les royaumes barbares : une approche régionale( Book )

1 edition published in 2012 in Multiple languages and held by 33 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
