The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of movable-bed tidal inlet hydraulic models in predicting prototype behavior, by comparing model predictions with the observations made in the prototype, and to examine the scaling requirements for such models. Seven model studies were conducted by WES during the period 1939 to 1969. Calibrations of five of these models, as measured by bed topography changes, are evaluated by means of quantitative indicators, including correlation coefficients and root-mean-square (rms) error. The values of correlation coefficients, disregarding measurement errors in model and prototype soundings, were generally low and those of rms error high. Evaluation of data from the Galveston Harbor entrance model revealed that the shoaling rates and distribution along the navigation channel predicted by the model are not in good agreement with the prototype data. It was concluded that the model reproduction of details of bed topography was less accurate than that which might have been obtained had the proposed similitude criteria been used, and had more complete prototype data been available for calibration. Disagreement between model and prototype is believed to have been due to: scale effects introduced by nonsimilarity ofthe physical processes; insufficient prototype data for calibration and verification; oversimplification of the available prototype data for use in the model study; and experimental errors

The results of laboratory experiments on scour around circular piers in cohesionless bed material at high Froude numbers, F, up to 1.5 are presented. The scour depths in sediment transport regime (F is greater than F sub c) first slightly decreases and then increases with the increase in the Froude number. A formula to predict the scour depth at Froude numbers (F-F sub c) is equal to or greater than 0.15, is developed. The limitations of some of the existing predictors of local scour are discussed, and a new formula to predict the maximum clearwater scour is proposed

Factors influencing ice conveyance at river confluences by R Ettema( Book )

This report documents preliminary findings concerning ice jam conditions in river confluences, using two laboratory approaches. First is categorizing the different conditions of ice discharge into a confluence based on two general classifications: free drift of ice and movement of contiguous ice accumulations. The variables defining ice discharge for the two categories are assembled via dimensional analysis into two consistent sets of nondimensional parameters. The categorization, together with the nondimensional parameters, is used to evaluate ice jam problems at confluences the two most common causes of jams seem to be sluggish water velocities in the outflow channel and local bathymetric features. The second approach examines how confluence geometry and flow processes affect ice discharge for example, the influence on ice discharge of bathymetric features. The approach uses a large hydraulic model of a two channel confluence, which is adaptable to a variety of channels, and particle image velocimetry (PIV) for determining and mapping whole fields of water and ice velocities in a confluence. PIV, which is becoming extensively used, lends itself very well here. This study is the first demonstration of the PIV method for ice movement through a two river confluence. It shows promise. The hydraulic model and PIV method are used in a case study of ice discharge through the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, a confluence prone to severe ice jams

This study was conducted for the purpose of evaluating a new concept for a bank-protection structure: The Iowa Vane . The underlying idea involves countering the torque exerted on the primary flow by its curvature and vertical velocity gradient, thereby eliminating or significantly reducing the secondary flow and thus reducing the undermining of the outer banks and the high-velocity attack on it. The new structure consists of an array of short, vertical, submerged vanes installed with a certain orientation on the channel bed. A relatively small number of vanes can produce bend flows which are practically uniform across the channel. The height of the vanes is less than half the water depth, and their angle with the flow direction is of the order of l0 degrees. In this study, design relations have been established. The relations, and the vanes' overall performance, have been tested in a laboratory model under different flow and sediment conditions. The results are used for the design of an Iowa-Vane bank protection structure for a section of East Nishnabotna River along U.S. Highway 34 at Red Oak, Iowa
