Director Rolf Hansen infuses his love story-cum-musical with a "convincing aura of the hysteria of war and its effects on the civilian population." Scandinavian singer Hanna Holberg, the toast of Berlin, dazzles the young Luftwaffe pilot Lt. Paul Wendlandt. Surprised by an air raid, Paul and Hanna take refuge in her home with Paul remaining till morning. Their romance blossoms and the two announce their engagement at a party, much to the chagrin of the composer Rudnitzky who is also in love with Hanna. In the midst of congratulations, a telegram arrives summoning Paul to duty. After his departure for the front Hanna, reunites with him in Rome but their reunion is again interrupted by war. Learning to be a proper German soldier's wife, the once pampered diva works in a military hospital where one day the wounded Paul arrives. This most successful of the Zarah Leander vehicles was not heartily received by the Army High Command or OKW (Oberkommanda der Wehrmacht) which complained about the film's "immoral" depiction of Luftwaffe pilots. The OKW's protests, however, were roundly rejected by Göring and Goebbels. The film was immensely popular and its two notable songs, "I know there'll be a miracle," and "The World's not going to end because of this" became popular hit tunes. After the war, the film was prohibited by the Allied board of censorship from being shown on German soil but an edited version was distributed to other European countries. Cut from the original were scenes of the officer and singer taking refuge in an air raid shelter and those in which Hanna entertains German troops in Paris
