Stable and random motions in dynamical systems: with special emphasis on celestial mechanics by
Jürgen Moser(
Book
)
32 editions published between 1973 and 2001 in English and Undetermined and held by 652 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
For centuries, astronomers have been interested in the motions of the planets and in methods to calculate their orbits. Since Newton, mathematicians have been fascinated by the related Nbody problem. They seek to find solutions to the equations of motion for N masspoints interacting with an inversesquarelaw force and to determine whether there are quasiperiodic orbits or not. Attempts to answer such questions have led to the techniques of nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory. In this book, a classic work of modern applied mathematics, Jürgen Moser presents a succinct account of two pillars of the theory: stable and chaotic behavior. He discusses cases in which Nbody motions are stable, covering topics such as Hamiltonian systems, the (Moser) twist theorem, and aspects of KolmogorovArnoldMoser theory. He then explores chaotic orbits, exemplified in a restricted threebody problem, and describes the existence and importance of homoclinic points. This book is indispensable for mathematicians, physicists, and astronomers interested in the dynamics of few and manybody systems and in fundamental ideas and methods for their analysis. After thirty years, Moser's lectures are still one of the best entrées to the fascinating worlds of order and chaos in dynamics

Dynamical systems : C.I.M.E. lectures, Bressanone, Italy, June 1978 by

We have developed a structure theory for real analytic diffeomorphisms of compact surfaces very similar to the well known structure theory of Axiom A diffeomorphisms. This theory has strong implications for the structure of systems with two degrees of freedom. We have also found a relatively simple proof of our previously established result that there are residual subsets A of open sets of diffeomorphisms with the property that each element in A has infinitely many sinks. Another result states that many systems with two degrees of freedom have fractal basin boundaries with Hausdorff dimension two (i.e. maximal Hausdorff dimension). This leads to the frequent existence of what we call pseudoattractors closed invariant sets with dense orbits whose basins have maximal dimension. (edc)

Notes on dynamical systems by
Jürgen Moser(
Book
)
10 editions published in 2005 in English and Undetermined and held by 244 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book is an introduction to the field of dynamical systems, in particular, to the special class of Hamiltonian systems. The authors aimed at keeping the requirements of mathematical techniques minimal but giving detailed proofs and many examples and illustrations from physics and celestial mechanics. After all, the celestial Nbody problem is the origin of dynamical systems and gave rise in the past to many mathematical developments. Publisher description

Selected chapters in the calculus of variations by
Jürgen Moser(
Book
)
13 editions published between 2000 and 2003 in English and Undetermined and held by 182 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"These lecture notes describe the AubryMatherTheory within the calculus of variations. The text consists of the translated original lectures of Jurgen Moser and a bibliographic appendix with comments on the current stateoftheart in this field of interest. Students will find a rapid introduction to the calculus of variations, leading to modern dynamical systems theory. Differential geometric applications are discussed, in particular billiards and minimal geodesics on the twodimensional torus. Many exercises and open questions make this book a valuable resource for both teaching and research."Jacket
