Poems of Paul Celan by Paul Celan( Book )

19 editions published between 1988 and 2007 in English and German and held by 1,067 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is a new, revised edition of an Anvil Classic. Paul Celan was one of the great poets of the twentieth century. Born into a Jewish family in a German enclave of Romania, his life and work were indelibly marked by the Holocaust: his parents perished in a camp, he was lucky to survive. The Jewish experience and the force of history stretched language, and Celan himself, beyond breaking point. Celan committed suicide in Paris in 1970, but not before he had remade and reclaimed German as a language fit for poets. Celan spoke of a language 'north of the future' and described his poems as messages in bottles that might never be received

Selected poems by Hans Magnus Enzensberger( Book )

15 editions published between 1981 and 1999 in English and held by 644 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Hans Magnus Enzensberger was born in 1929 in Bavaria and grew up in Nazi Nuremberg. His poetry's social and moral criticism of the post-war world owes much to Marxism, yet insists on the freedoms which have often been denied by Communist governments: like Orwell he maintains that satire and criticism should not be party-political. As well as being Germany's most important poet, he is a provocative cultural essayist and one of Europe's leading political thinkers. No British poet can match him in his range of interests and his moral passion. Enzensberger's Selected Poems draws on several collections published during the past thirty years, right up to his most recent book, Music of the Future. It includes a large selection from The Sinking of the Titanic, his last British collection, which The Guardian called 'a brilliant fantasia on the foundering of western society'. For George Szirtes, writing in the New Statesman, it was 'a dramatic and philosophical statement of compulsive power ... our emotions and our reason are driven along together as in the best of Brecht. We hear in Enzensberger the human voice amongst human voices, feel the extraordinariness of ordinary men.'

The Parisian prowler : Le spleen de Paris, petits poèmes en prose by Charles Baudelaire( Book )

14 editions published between 1946 and 1988 in 3 languages and held by 515 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From Edouard Manet to T.S. Eliot to Jim Morrison, the reach of Charles Baudelaire's influence is beyond estimation. In this prize-winning translation of his no-longer-neglected masterpiece, Baudelaire offers a singular view of 1850s Paris. Evoking a mélange of reactions, these fifty "fables of modern life" take us on various tours led by a flâneur, an incognito stroller. Through day and night, in gleaming cafés and filthy side streets, this alienated yet compassionate esthete muses on the bizarre in the commonplace, the sublime in the mundane. As the work reveals a teeming metropolis on the eve of great change, we see a Paris as contradictory, surprising, and ultimately unknowable as our guide himself. Complemented by period illustrations, The Parisian Prowler is an essential companion to Les Fleurs du Mal and other works by the father of modern poetry.--From publisher description
