En 1572, le Japon est en proie aux guerres incessantes entre clans rivaux. Le plus puissant de ses clans est commandé par Shingen Takeda, qui voudrait agrandir son terrritoire (le domaine de Kai), mais se heurte à plusieurs autres chefs de clans prestigieux. Mortellement blessé lors d'une bataille, Shingen fait promettre à ses généraux de garder le secret de sa mort pendant trois ans, période pendant laquelle il est remplacé par un "Kagemusha" ou "ombre du guerrier". Les qualités du sosie de Shingen en font un seigneur efficace et respecté, ce qui lui vaut la jalousie du prince héritié
