"Witold Gombrowicz (1904-1969), novelist, essayist, and playwright, was one of the most important Polish writers of the twentieth century. A candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1968, he was described by Milan Kundera as "one of the great novelists of our century" and by John Updike as "one of the profoundest of the late moderns."" "Gombrowicz's works were considered scandalous and subversive by the ruling powers in Poland and were banned for nearly forty years. He spent his last years in France teaching philosophy; this book is a series of reflections based on his lectures."--Jacket

Welcome to the bizarre universe of Witold Gombrowicz, whose legendary short story collection is presented here for the first time in English. These tales are utterly unique in world literature."--BOOK JACKET
Ivona, Princess of Burgundia by Witold Gombrowicz( Book )

The play follows the impetuous Prince Philip, heir to the throne. Apparently on a lark, he decides to engage himself to the ugliest girl in the kingdom. He seems to enjoy the consternation it creates in his parents, King Ignatius & Queen Margaret, and the court. Unfortunately, as the charm of the engagement wears off, the taciturn Ivona wears on him, changing his whimsical affections. Philip berates and insults the impassive Ivona who appears to fall in love with Philip. The play concludes with each royal plotting Ivona's death. The superficiality and unvarnished cruelty of the court makes the play fly by in hilarious fashion
