Corrosion inhibitors in concrete interim report( Book )

1 edition published in 2002 in English and held by 108 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The overall objective of this work in progress is to assess the effectiveness of corrosion inhibitors for steel in concrete. Three commercially available inhibitors, DCI-S (calcium nitrite-based), and FerroGard 901 and Rheocrete 222+ (both based on organic compounds), were selected for detailed examination. To determine the amount of inhibitor remaining in concrete, an accurate method to analyze for calcium nitrite was developed, and analyses for the other two inhibitors are being explored. The ability of calcium nitrite to stay in place was examined by laboratory experiments of inhibitor diffusion in concrete and by examination of available concrete samples exposed for long times to the outdoors environment

A comparison of programed and standard textbooks in college instruction by Margaret Barrow Fisher( Book )

3 editions published in 1963 in English and held by 72 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study was designed to determine whether significant differences occur in mastery of a college course lecture-discussion type for freshmen and sophomores when students use programed materials of instruction rather than standard textbooks. Four standard and four programed sections were used for comparative purposes. Students selected these sections without advance notice of instructional technique. Comparisons were made between the sections and other relevant subgroups by appropriate statistical measures, with grades being the principal criterion for subject-matter mastery. Few significant differences in mastery of subject matter were found between students in the two major groups. Several direct expressions of preference for programed material were obtained, however, some students felt that programed material demanded more time and study than they wished to give, and several students in standard sections expressed resentment of an advantage in preparing for multiple-choice examinations that they felt must accrue to students using the programed textbooks. The preference for vertical over horizontal program format was expressed very strongly. (Lp)

Practical strategies for teaching social emotional skills( Visual )

1 edition published in 2007 in English and held by 62 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Some key indicators of school readiness are linked to social emotional development. Among these are persistence at difficult tasks, the ability to express emotions appropriately, to make and sustain relationships with peers and adults, to negotiate and cooperate in a group setting, and confidence. When children don't have these skills, they are less likely to benefit from even the best instruction and they are more likely to engage in challenging behavior. This video presents concrete strategies caregivers and teachers can use to model, practice, and reinforce behaviors such as turn taking, helping others, sharing both things and feelings, asking for help, and cooperation. Helping children learn to manage their own behavior in preschool significantly affects their later life success

Sprayed zinc galvanic anodes for concrete marine bridge substructures by Alberto A Sagüés( Book )

2 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 45 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A low-cost method for galvanic cathodic protection of reinforcing steel in concrete was examined. In this method, arc-sprayed zinc is deposited on the external concrete surface of steel-reinforced marine substructure bridge components, which are normally subject to corrosion of the reinforcement as a result of chloride ion contamination of the concrete. The concrete cover of corrosion-damaged substructure components is removed, exposing the reinforcing steel. After sandblasting, the zinc is arc-sprayed over the exposed steel and surrounding concrete, creating a 1/2 mm thick galvanic anode, which is in electronic contact with the steel and in electrolytic contact with the water in the concrete pores. In this investigation, the ability of the system to deliver protective current was examined by experiments in the laboratory and at field installations at bridges in the Florida Keys
Comparison of two automated teaching procedures for retarded children by Leslie F Malpass( Book )

3 editions published in 1963 in English and held by 43 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A study was designed to evaluate the usefulness of automated teaching procedures for helping mentally retarded children learn word recognition, reading, and spelling. The subjects for the study (66) were drawn from established public school classes for the educable mentally retarded. Subjects, ranging in age from 8-16 years, were matched and assigned randomly to either an automated teaching group or to a conventional classroom group. Three hypotheses were tested--(1) there will be no differences between automated teaching and standard instruction for teaching selected tasks, (2) effective retention of skills, taught through automated means, will be demonstrated by post-learning tasks, and (3) no significant differences will be found between an automated procedure utilizing a multiple-choice method and one utilizing a typewriter keyboard method. Hypothesis one was rejected in light of significant skill improvement by subjects using both automated teaching procedures over conventional methods. Hypothesis two was partially supported. Spelling improvement was retained over a relatively short period. Hypothesis three was partially supported. In view of the findings, further research concerning automated teaching with the retarded was recommended. (Jc)
