On the occasion of its 25th anniversary the European Sou- thern Observatory (ESO), is publishing a selection from its photographic treasures of the southern skies: 90 colour and 147 black and white plates have been reproduced. Thirty maps make it easy to locate the objects shown. Part 1 is devoted to extragalactic phenomena. Part 2 deals with our Galaxy. Part 3contains the results from observations of minor bo- dies in the solar system(asteroids and comets with an em- phasis on the most beautiful Halley's comet photographs). The final part presents the Observatory itself
Groups of galaxies in the nearby universe proceedings of the ESO Workshop held at Santiago de Chile, December 5-9, 2005 by I Saviane( )
7 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 368 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
For every galaxy in the field or in clusters, there are about three galaxies in groups. The Milky Way itself resides in a group, and groups can be found at high redshift. This book aims to offer us the chance to study galaxies in environments characterized by strong interactions. It summarizes various aspects of research on groups of galaxies
Precision spectroscopy in astrophysics proceedings of the ESO/Lisbon/Aveiro Conference held in Aveiro, Portugal, 11-15 September 2006 by Nuno C Santos( )
6 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 364 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"High-accuracy Doppler shift measurements and high-precision spectroscopy are primary techniques in the search for exo-planets." "Further extremely interesting applications include the analysis of QSO absorption lines to determine the variability of physical constants and the analysis of the isotopic ratios of absorption lines both in stars and in QSOs, and the determination of stellar oscillations through radial velocity measurements. Since the use of high-precision/resolution spectroscopy is closely connected to the ability to collect a large number of photons, the scientific domains using this technique benefit tremendously from the use of 8-meter class telescopes and will fully exploit the tremendous gain provided by future Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs). IR high-resolution spectroscopy should soon approach the same accuracy regime achieved in the optical range." "This volume covers the astrophysical and technical aspects of high-precision spectroscopy with an outlook to future developments, and represents a reference work for researchers in those fields."--Jacket
Growing black holes accretion in a cosmological context : proceedings of the MPA/ESO/MPE/USM joint astronomy conference held in Garching, Germany, 21-25 June 2004 by MPA/ESO/MPE/USM Joint Astronomy Conference( )
4 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 362 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Supermassive black holes (SMBH) are among the most spectacular objects in the Universe, and their study sheds light on fundamental physical phenomena occurring in their immediate vicinity, such as accretion of gas and general relativistic effects. However, in recent years, it has been established that SMBH are not just interesting laboratories of strong gravity and high-energy astrophysics, but have direct impact on the evolution of the large scale structure and have an influence on the appearance of our Universe. For this reason, scientists from the extra-galactic astronomy, cosmology and accretion physics communities were brought together to discuss the implications of the connection between the supermassive black hole growth and galaxy formation. The Conference "Growing Black Holes: Accretion in a Cosmological Context'' was held in Garching during June 21-25, 2004 as a part of the joint MPA/MPE/ESO/USM Astronomy conference series. The meeting was attended by about 170 scientists from more than 20 countries all over the world. These proceedings contain the excellent review and invited talks that summarized the state of the art in the research on the respective topic as well as the equally interesting contributed talks and poster papers, many of which presented original ideas or latest observational results. This book is thus a useful research and reference tool for the entire astrophysical community. TOC:First Supermassive Black Holes and Structure Formation.- Observations of Supermassive Black Holes at Higher Redshift.- Observations of Super Massive Black Holes in the Local Universe.- The Case of Sagittarius A*.- Interaction of Supermassive Black Holes with Their Environment.- Physics of Accretion Discs Around Supermassive Black Holes.- Black Hole-Black Hole Mergers and Gravitational Waves.- Jeds, Outflows and QSO Feedback.- The Cosmological Evolution of Active Galactic Nuclei and the X-Ray Background
Multiple stars across the H-R diagram proceedings of the ESO Workshop held in Garching, Germany, 12-15 July 2005 by S Hubrig( )
6 editions published between 2007 and 2008 in English and held by 360 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The ESO workshop "Multiple Stars across the H-R Diagram" was held in Garching on July 12-15, 2005. The topics included observations of multiple stars from ground and space, dynamical and stellar evolution in multiple systems, effects of the environment on multiplicity, formation and early evolution of multiple stars, and special components of multiple stars. Research on multiple stars has seen major developments during recent years due to the availability of large-aperture telescopes equipped with highly sophisticated instruments for multi-wavelength observations, of modern interfero

New interferometers as the VLTI, the Keck-I and CHARA along with their sophisticated instrumentation have provided new levels of accuracy, spectral resolution and access to various spectral bands from the optical to the thermal infrared. Investigations are now enabled on a wealth of astrophysical sources with unprecedented levels of angular resolution and sensitivity, producing a considerable body of new, exciting scientific results. Celebrating the completion of the first phase of the VLTI development, the organisors of the ESO workshop "The Power of Optical/IR Interferometry," held
Science with the VLT in the ELT era by A. F. M Moorwood( )
4 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 339 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Workshop 'Science with the VLT in the ELT era' was organised by ESO as a forum for the astronomical community to debate its expected future use of ESO's Very Large Telescope ( and its VLTI interferometric mode) when other facilities such as ALMA, JWST and, hopefully, at least one extremely large 30-40m class telescope will be operating. VLT/I science highlights were presented, future science priorities argued, synergies between the VLT and the future facilities confirmed and specific new VLT/I instruments proposed

Black holes in binaries and galactic nuclei : diagnostics, demography, and formation : proceedings of the ESO workshop held at Garching, Germany, 6-8 September 1999, in honour of Riccardo Giacconi ( Book )
3 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 139 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The observational evidence for the existence of black holes has grown significantly over recent decades. Stellar-mass black holes are detected as X-ray sources in binary systems, while supermassive black holes, with masses more than a million times the mass of the Sun, lurk in the nuclei of galaxies. These proceedings provide a useful and up-to-date overview of the observations of black holes in binaries, in the center of the Milky Way, and in the nuclei of galaxies, presented by leading expert astronomers. Special attention is given to the formation (including the recent evidence from gamma-ray bursts), physical properties, and demographics of black holes
Chemical evolution from zero to high redshift : proceedings of the ESO workshop held at Garching, Germany, 14-16 October, 1998 by ESO workshop( Book )
4 editions published in 1999 in English and German and held by 137 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The observational and interpretive tools for the study of chemical evolution are starting to be mature enough that they can be applied with some confidence to extra-galactic systems and integrated populations at increasingly high redshift. This book is devoted to the study of the interplay between different methods of measuring chemical abundances with astrophysical models. Studies of chemical abundances and evolution from stars, inter-stellar medium and local group galaxies at zero redshift to distant galaxies, clusters of galaxies and inter-galactic medium at high redshift are presented. There are also synopses on progress in instrumentation for abundance determination
