"Thomas Eakins wrote and illustrated this drawing manual for students, based on his famous lectures at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. After his forced resignation in 1886, Eakins abandoned plans to publish the manual. The manuscript and illustrations remained in his studio, where they were recovered after the death of the artist's widow in 1988. Published here for the first time, the drawing manual offers readers a unique opportunity to meet Eakins in his own words."--BOOK JACKET

A remarkable collection of American drawings and watercolors from one of the leading university museums in the United States The Princeton University Art Museum's collection of American drawings and watercolors is impressive in both scope and quality, providing a comprehensive overview of the nation's artistic traditions. This lavishly illustrated book highlights seventy-seven master drawings and watercolors chosen from the museum's extensive collection. The selections, which range from the eighteenth century to the present, are by such eminent American artists as Benjamin West, Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, Mary Cassatt, Andrew Wyeth, Georgia O'Keeffe, Lee Bontecou, and Tom Wesselmann. A group of outstanding works by Hudson River School and Ash Can artists also distinguishes the collection. Each of the selected drawings and watercolors is reproduced in full color and is accompanied by an in-depth catalogue entry. The book also features an introduction by John Wilmerding describing Princeton's history of collecting American art, as well as an essay by Kathleen A. Foster on the historiography of American drawings and watercolors. A useful checklist of the Museum's entire collection of over 1,300 American drawings and watercolors, selectively illustrated in color, concludes the book. This beautiful and informative volume clearly demonstrates that the holdings of the Princeton University Art Museum represent an extraordinary resource for students, scholars, and those with a love of American art and art history. This book accompanies an exhibition on view at the Princeton University Art Museum (October 16, 2004, to January 9, 2005) the Musee d'Art Americain, Giverny, France (Spring 2005) and the High Museum of Art, Atlanta (Spring 2006)
Thomas Chambers : American marine and landscape painter, 1808-1869 / Kathleen A. Foster by Kathleen A Foster ( Book )
4 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 262 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Labeled as a traveling American folk artist when he was rediscovered in the mid-20th century, the mysterious Thomas Chambers here receives a fresh and creative reassessment. Although his distinctive sea and landscapes appear in many American collections, little is known about this English-born painter, who arrived in New Orleans in 1832 and disappeared from record in the mid-1860s, leaving many paintings that later resurfaced in rural New York and Massachusetts. In this richly illustrated work, Kathleen A. Foster shows, however, that far from being simply an itinerant painter of folk art, Chambers actually enjoyed a professional, even entrepreneurial, relationship to the art world." "Foster performs close studies of Chambers's known works, his stylistic relationship to his brother (English marine painter George Chambers), and a newly discovered American auction record of 1845. Chambers, she argues, provided a popular landscape art for a middle class of mixed cosmopolitan and folk tastes. Bringing "fancy" painting to this new constituency, Chambers worked outside academic circles, drawing astutely from popular culture. In the 20th century, his rediscovery as "America's first modern" paid tribute to his independent spirit and decorative panache."--BOOK JACKET
An Eakins masterpiece restored : seeing The Gross Clinic anew ( Book )
5 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 250 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Thomas Eakins (1844-1916) is acknowledged as one of the preeminent American painters of the 19th century. As a young artist in 1875 he prepared a monumental painting for the Philadelphia Centennial of Dr. Samuel D. Gross of Jefferson Medical College. Rejected by the selection committee for being too gruesome, The Gross Clinic is hailed today as the artist's masterpiece. Purchased by the medical college, the work was a fixture there until 2006, when its threatened sale prompted thousands to donate funds to keep it in Philadelphia through a joint acquisition by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Kathleen A. Foster and Mark S. Tucker update the story of The Gross Clinic to the present day. They draw on discoveries made during the 2009-10 project to look more deeply into the history, aesthetics, and technique of the painting. Through their discussion, complemented by interpretations from the perspectives of cultural and medical history by Steven Conn and Mark S. Schreiner, M.D., respectively, this celebrated painting can now be understood anew."--Publisher's website
