Urbanisms working with doubt by Steven Holl ( Book )
16 editions published between 2007 and 2010 in English and held by 462 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Contemporary urban development is increasingly characterized by a reliance on diagrams, maps, and graphs to convey the rational, statistical point of view of the professional urban planner. In his new book, Urbanisms, architect Steven Holl suggests that just as modern medicine has recognized the power of the irrational psyche, urban planners need to realize that the experiential power of cities cannot be completely rationalized and must be studied subjectively. With a selection of urban and architectural projects from his thirty-year practice, Holl stretches urban planning into the domain of uncertainty, from prose into poetry. Urbanisms examines how perception and the senses are intertwined with the material, space, and light of urban form."--BOOK JACKET

Questions of perception : phenomenology of architecture by Steven Holl ( Book )
19 editions published between 1994 and 2008 in 3 languages and held by 310 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Third printing of the classic A+U 1994 special edition covering the work of Holl, Pallasmaa, and, Perez-Gomez, titled Questions of Perception. Their three individual essays presented in the book, are thematically linked; each one tries to explain the role man's perception plays in architecture and also explores phenomenal accounts. In their original introduction, the authors write: "The endless cultural limitations and contradictions inherent in artistic work, revealed with impeccable clarity and logic by the critics' deconstructive theory, are ultimately of limited use for the generation of architecture. The architect must take a position, one that necessarily has ethical consequences, and for which words, a theoretical discourse is nevertheless indispensable
The Chapel of St. Ignatius by Steven Holl ( Book )
8 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 273 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The jewel-like Chapel of St. Ignatius contains the essence of Holl's vision - his interest in the phenomenology of space, his passionate investigations of form and material, and his use of reflected light and color. This book functions as a journal in the life of this extraordinary building. From Holl's preparatory watercolor sketches, to design development and working drawing details, to construction shots showing the unique precast system, to a large photographic portfolio of the completed building, The Chapel of St. Ignatius reveals Holl's working method as well as the finished building. Essays by Steven Holl and client Gerald T. Cobb, S.J., introduce the book."--Jacket

Rick Joy : desert works by Rick Joy ( )
7 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 203 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The nine buildings shown in this, the first monograph on Joy's work, express his interest in making places that are transcendent moments of space, light, and matter. In each of the projects the physical landscape, its specific environment, and its rich history are revealed and celebrated. While many of the projects here use sustainable materials like rammed earth, Joy's primary interest is in the quality of the spaces he makes. He shows us how efficient and environmentally sensitive architecture can emerge as a by-product from a quest for the timeless qualities that are always associated with great architecture."--BOOK JACKET

Steven Holl : color, light, time by Jordi Safont-Tria ( Book )
7 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 145 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Following Written in Water (2002), this is the second publication devoted to Steven Holl's legendary watercolors. Four hundred watercolors represent the creative process of this renowned and influential American architect and reveal his highly personal method developed over many years, containing preliminary ideas and sketches of all major projects. Holl is known for his sculptural architecture and his virtuosic use of light, and watercolors are the ideal means to visualize these characteristic aspects of his work. At a time of rapidly changing technology in the service of architectural design, these watercolors become spectacular examples of a low-tech method. The results are invariably original works of art. The water colors are juxtaposed with photographs of the built architecture and emphasize the crucial aspect of scale"--OCLC

Building : Louis I. Kahn at Roosevelt Island by Barney Kulok ( Book )
4 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 102 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In September 2011, Barney Kulok was granted permission to create photographs at the construction site of Louis I. Kahn's Four Freedoms Park in New York City, commissioned in 1970 as a memorial to Franklin D. Roosevelt. The last design Kahn completed before his untimely death in 1974, Four Freedoms Park remained an unrealized work by one of the masters of twentieth-century architecture. Forty years after the original commission, it was finally completed in 2012. Unbuilt is at once a historical record and a multilayered visual investigation of form and the subtleties of texture--elements that were of fundamental importance to Kahn's approach . As architect Steven Holl writes, "Kulok's photographs free the subject matter from a literal interpretation of the site. They stand as 'Equivalents' to the words about material, light and shadow that Louis Kahn often spoke
Horizontal skyscraper by Steven Holl Architects ( Book )
3 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 95 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Richly illustrated with photographs, drawings, and water colors, this book documents the design and construction of Steven Holl's most ambitious project to date. Commissioned as the headquarters for China's largest real estate holding company, the Vanke Center became that country's first LEED platinum building and is a culminating expression of Holl's quest to realize super green, hybrid buildings that combine living, working, cultural, and commercial programs while creating and preserving public urban spaces. Located in the rapidly developing and overcrowded region of Shenzhen, Holl's Horizontal Skyscraper defines and protects a public landscape, while also providing maximum views of the sea and the surrounding hillsides for Vanke employees. "The Vanke Center is a surreal hybrid--part building, part landscape, part infrastructure," wrote Nicolai Ourroussoff in The New York Times, "It demonstrates what can happen when talented architects are allowed to practice their craft uninhibited by creative restrictions."
