The analysis of beauty by William Hogarth( Book )

166 editions published between 1753 and 2018 in 5 languages and held by 2,054 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume, published in 1753, was Hogarth's grand treatise on beauty, design and taste and was intended to help educate the masses on how to perceive art. His most prominent idea is the line of beauty, which is an s-shaped line that can be seen?set inside a pyramid?on the title page. Hogarth's theory is that this line is what captures a viewer's attention and evokes a sense of grace and movement. Unfortunately for Hogarth, his book was largely lampooned by his contemporaries and critics, including Charles Churchill who satirized the work in his "An Epistle to William Hogarth."

Hogarth by Mark Hallett( Book )

4 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 445 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"William Hogarth (1697-1764) is one of the most versatile, innovative and celebrated of all British artists. He lived at a time when Britain was emerging as an increasngly urbanized, commercialized and aggressively imperial power. Like many other artists, he exploited and benefited from these changes in British society. Among his contemporaries, it was Hogarth who commented most brilliantly on society, both positively and negatively. Whether in ink or paint, his work celebrates the benefits of commerce, politeness and patriotism while simultaneously focusing on the corruption, hypocrisy and prejudice that unavoidably appeared in their wake."

William Hogarth by Matthew Craske( Book )

2 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 347 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Taking a thematic approach to this quintessentially British artist, Matthew Craske introduces the reader to Hogarth's varied artistic production, including his series, engravings, portraits, and such major paintings as A Rake's Progress. He brings to life an artist who produced works aimed at fostering self-improvement--works in which vice can ruin the aristocrat as swiftly as the harlot--but also works of great humor. We meet an artist emblematic of his day and time but also utterly innovative and long-sighted
