Ce recueil est largement inspiré, dans sa composition, de Meaning in The Visual Arts (1957) dont l'auteur avait souhaité une adaptation au public français. "L'histoire de l'art est une discipline humaniste" définit les trois niveaux de signification d'une œuvre et leur donne pour principe de contrôle une histoire des styles, des types et des symboles; "L'histoire de la théorie des proportions humaines", conçue comme un miroir de l'histoire des styles, applique la méthode à l'analyse d'un schème structural particulier. "Artiste, savant, génie" (1962) peut apparaître comme la dernière synthèse de la pensée de l'auteur sur la Renaissance. Tandis que des deux articles qui le suivent, l'un, "Le premier feuillet du Libro de Vasari", montre la façon dont cette époque, la Renaissance, a pris conscience d'un style, le gothique, qu'elle tenait pour extérieur à elle-même, l'autre, "Deux projets de façade par Beccafumi", est, sur le maniérisme dans l'architecture du XVIe siècle, une discussion sur les principes qui, aujourd'hui, permettent de caractériser un style.
