"As Hollis Frampton's photographs and retreated experimental films were testing the boundaries of the camera arts in the 1960s and 1970s, his provocative and highly literate writings were alternating to establish an intellectually resonate form of discourse for these critically underemplored fields. This collection of Frampton's writings presents his critical essays (many writer for Artforum and October) along with additional material, including lectures, correspondence, interviews, production notes, and scripts, it replaces - and supersedes - the long unavailable Circles of confession, published in 1983"--Jacket

The complete works of Joyce Wieland : 1963 - 1986( Visual )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 17 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This set brings together for the first time the film works of Joyce Wieland (1931-1998), largely regarded as one of Canada's most influential and important artists. The collection includes sixteen shorts and two feature films made from new high-definition digital transfers. A multi-disciplinary artist who produced work in a wide variety of media, Wieland's intelligent and irreverent explorations of female sexuality, domestic life, ecology and Canadian nationalism put her at the forefront of feminist practice. Wieland made her mark in the film underground in New York in the 1960s, where she was associated with structural filmmakers such as Michael Snow and Hollis Frampton. While her films employ materialist formal strategies, the irony and socio-political content of her work sets her apart from her structuralist compatriots, as does her exploration of narrative. This collection will be of vital interest to film- and art-lovers alike, as well as those involved in the fields of film studies and production, visual arts, art history and women's studies."--Container

Solidarity. A film on the Dare strike of the early 1970s. Hundreds of feet and legs, milling, marching and picketing with the word "solidarity" superimposed on the screen. The soundtrack is an organizer's speech on the labour situation. Like her films "Rat Life and Diet in North America," "Pierre Vallieres" and "Reason Over Passion," "Solidarity" combines a political awareness, an aesthetic viewpoint and a sense of humour unique in Wieland's work
The complete works of Joyce Wieland. Reason over passion, 1969( Visual )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Wieland's most important and complex nationalist statement, La raison avant la passion, is a playful, penetrating exploration of the landscape and mindscape of Canada. Taken from Pierre Elliot Trudeau's assertion, "Reason over passion -- that is the theme of all my writing," the film is an impressionistic train and car trip from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast. Throughout the film, the letters of the title are varied randomly, as in an anagram, by a computer. The first part is dominated by the colour green; the second, orange; and the third, white. Made in three parts with a prelude, La raison avant la passion is largely a hymn to the beauty of the country but it also raises questions about cultural identity
