Sono queste le vittime di un mondo in trasformazione, fra medioevo e età moderna, in cui vengono a sommarsi i costi sociali di due sistemi che si oppongono e si intersecano; sono i reietti in una terra dominata dall'aristocrazia dei proprietari e dei diritti nobiliari, e sono i sacrificati di quel nuovo vorticoso scambio di merci e di denaro, di lavoro e di manodopera, che annuncia l'ascesa del capitalismo e delle sue élites. Questa multiforme umanità perdente è una popolazione enorme: ha una sua fisionomia, una sua vita autonoma e persino gerghi particolari; ma nella sua sostanziale marginalità, è anche una componente attiva e passiva dei grandi processi di cambiamento del mondo occidentale. Ad essa guarda la Chiesa, ora con occhio benevolo, ora con riprovazione; ad essa fanno appello le prime spaventose manifatture; da essa traggono risorse gli eserciti di ogni dove, in quell'informe bacino sociale fermentano per secoli tutti gli spiriti di rivolta e di rivoluzione. Bronislaw Geremek, marxista educato alla scuola di Marian Malowist e di Fernand Braudel, scopre in anni lontani questa brulicante umanità conducendo i suoi primi studi sulla figura di François Villon.
