If standard gravitational theory is correct, then most of the matterin the universe is in an unidentified form which does not emit enoughlight to have been detected by current instrumentation. This book isthe second editon of the lectures given at the 4th Jerusalem WinterSchool for Theoretical Physics, with new material added. The lecturesare devoted to the "missing matter" problem in the universe, thesearch to understand dark matter. The goal of this volume is to makecurrent research work on unseen matter accessible to students withoutprior experience in this area and to provide insights for
Solar neutrinos : the first thirty years( Book )

9 editions published between 1994 and 1995 in English and held by 202 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The papers reprinted in this book depict a research field that is poised to answer some of the fundamental questions of twentieth-century physics and astronomy: How does the sun shine? What is the dark matter? Is there new physics beyond the "standard model"?" "This book is of interest to students as well as active researchers in the scientific areas spanned by the reprinted papers, which include physics, chemistry, astronomy, geology, and engineering. Historians of science, some of whom have already used the solar neutrino problem as a case study, will also find this collection a rich source of examples and insights." "Solar Neutrinos gives one the special feeling of being present at the birth of a scientific field. The physical ideas are presented with a simplicity that is unusual in review papers. By delving into the scientific landmarks reprinted here, one can see clearly how researchers - starting with a paucity of data and with conflicting hypotheses - struggled together to grope their way to a better understanding of the sun and of weak interaction physics."--BOOK JACKET

Proceedings of the Carolina Symposium on Neutrino Physics : its impact on particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology : University of South Carolina, 10-12 March 2000 by Carolina Symposium on Neutrino Physics( Book )

11 editions published in 2001 in English and Undetermined and held by 54 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Neutrinos play a key role in many areas of particle physics, nuclear physics and astrophysics. The recent discovery of neutrino oscillation has given the first hint of new physics beyond the standard model. Clearly, it is extremely important to study further the oscillation and other fundamental properties of neutrinos. It is also important to improve our knowledge of neutrino-nucleus reactions, which are crucial for understanding a large class of astrophysical phenomena. These and many other interesting questions can be investigated at stopped pion neutrino facilities like the one planned for the Spallation Neutron Source at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The purpose of the Carolina Symposium was two fold: to explore and exchange ideas on the latest developments in general frontiers of neutrino physics and related fields; and to address specific issues pertaining to the above-mentioned stopped pion neutrino facility. Among the topics covered in the proceedings are: cosmology and neutrino; standard model tests with neutrinos; neutrino oscillation, experiments and theories; dark matter search; double beta-decay; rare events detection techniques; the solar neutrino problem; supernova explosion, nucleosynthesis; and the ORLaND project
