Corporate financial distress and bankruptcy : a complete guide to predicting & avoiding distress and profiting from bankruptcy by Edward I Altman( Book )

16 editions published between 1983 and 1993 in English and held by 319 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The number of billion-dollar-plus firms filing for bankruptcy in the 1981 to 1983 recession was seven. Thirty-three filed from 1988 to 1992! Predicting, avoiding, managing, and profiting from corporate distress has never been bigger business. Leading international authority Edward I. Altman's Second Edition of Corporate Financial Distress and Bankruptcy describes a vast range of tools and techniques for anticipating financial crisis ... managing turnarounds ... and dealing with the complex legal, accounting, and investment consequences of bankruptcy. You'll find updated information on distressed firm investing - a unique, author-developed index that measures defaulted debt price movements and benchmarks market and investor performance; distress assessment - a range of robust and practical statistical models for classifying and assessing the distress potential of firms; credit assessment - a powerful statistical framework for bank loan valuation that establishes criteria for loan or investment loss reserves and even gives pricing guidelines for the commercial loan provider; present value assessment - an innovative technique for deriving the present value of loans that enables banks to keep up with accounting standards that require assets and liabilities to be marked at market or "fair" values; turnaround techniques - how to apply this book's failure prediction models to help corporations return to financial health, including an illustrative case history featuring the GTI Corporation; literature review - throughout the book, the author evaluates the latest scholarly investigations into theoretical, empirical, and normative issues surrounding distressed firms; and international dimension - a bibliography of failure prediction models applied outside the U.S. with a large number of industrialized and even third-world economy examples. If the bankruptcy business is booming - and a record number of defaults in 1991 suggests it surely is - then this new edition of Corporate Financial Distress and Bankruptcy is the best business news for quite some time

The fair value of insurance liabilities by Irwin T Vanderhoof( Book )

13 editions published between 1998 and 2011 in English and held by 190 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book explores theoretical and practical implications of reflecting the fair value of liabilities for insurance companies. In addition, the contributions discuss the disclosure of these values to the financial and regulatory communities and auditing firms which are actually caculating this illusive but important variable. It combines contributions by distinguished practitioners from the insurance, accounting and finance fields, with those of prominent academics. One of the central themes of the collection is that adequate disclosure of the true economic value of insurance company liabilities is both possible and desirable. Wherever possible, the insurance valuation process is wedded with modern financial theory. For example, the use of option pricing theory is applied to insurance companies, where the true value of the firm's liabilities is a critical variable. Methods such as cash flow, earned profit and indirect discount are explored

This is the authoritative collection of the writings of Dr Edward I. Altman, a leading authority on bankruptcy, corporate distress, and defaults, and creator of the widely-used Z-Score model. This book contains both classic and never-before-published articles, along with Altman's comprehensive introduction that places all the articles in context. The four major and related themes explored here are: distress prediction models, credit risk management, high yield "junk" bonds, and distressed securities, bankruptcy and firm valuation. These articles span more than 30 years of contributions to scholarly and professional publications and for government regulatory and policy considerations. Altman's pioneering works have formed the basis for modern credit risk management procedures and policies by practitioners and regulators, and have motivated and guided works from other scholars around the globe

The fair value of insurance business by Irwin T Vanderhoof( Book )

10 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 150 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Insurance companies, as well as banks and thrift institutions, have traditionally reported assets and liabilities on the basis of their amortized cost, or book value. But following the turmoil in securities markets due to highly volatile interest rate fluctuations in the 1980s and the early 1990s, and problems caused by inadequate liquidity, in the mid-1990s the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) issued a new ruling calling for financial intermediaries to report the fair, or market, value of most assets. Called FAS 115, this new standard is the first step in the eventual change to valuing all the assets and liabilities belonging to financial intermediaries under the fair value accounting method. Thus, these changes will pose tremendous future implications for three key business measures of a financial intermediary: Solvency: if the fair values of assets and liabilities are out-of-step, then healthy companies may report negative net worth and insolvent companies may appear to be in sound financial condition. Reported Earnings: if the fair values of assets and liabilities are out of step, then reported earnings will not accurately represent the financial operations of the company. Risk Management: FASB recently postponed the implementation of its new rules on accounting for the use of derivatives instruments. However, if the final set of rules for figuring the fair value of derivatives is not carefully crafted, it may be possible that companies prudently hedging their risks are subject to penalties in their financial reports, while companies taking greater risks appear to have less volatile financial performance. Compared to banks and other financial intermediaries, life insurance companies have the longest term and most complex liabilities, and hence the new FASB requirement poses the most severe challenges to the life insurance industry. The lessons learned from the debate among life insurance academics and professionals about how respond to the
