Without roots : the West, relativism, Christianity, Islam by Benedict( Book )

10 editions published between 2005 and 2007 in English and held by 921 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is Ratzinger's first book as Pope. Written in conjunction with President of the Italian Senate, Marcello Pera--a partnering of the statesman and the holy man--the book is a reassessment of the European "West" and its struggle to define itself in the wake of war, terrorism, diplomatic and spiritual crisis. Pope Benedict reveals a thorough grasp of the contemporary global climate and the tentative and fractious bonds that tie Europe to the rest of the world. Though critical and cautionary, the new Pope ultimately offers an assertive message of hope to mend the West's fractured identity and reconnect with its spiritual roots.--From publisher description
Scientific controversies : philosophical and historical perspectives by Peter K Machamer( Book )

11 editions published between 1999 and 2000 in English and Undetermined and held by 547 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Recently, social constructivists have claimed that the outcomes of scientific debates are strongly influenced by non-evidential factors such as the rhetorical prowess and professional clout of the rival researchers. The collection presents historical studies and philosophical analyses that undermine the plausibility of an extreme social constructivist perspective, yet indicate the need for a richer and more realistic account of scientific rationality." "The essays consider the nature of scientific controversy, how such controversies are resolved, and whether controversy is in fact necessary to the advancement of scientific knowledge."--Jacket

Rational changes in science : essays on scientific reasoning by Joseph C Pitt( Book )

16 editions published between 1985 and 1987 in 3 languages and held by 381 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

THE PROBLEMS OF SCIENTIFIC RATIONALITY Fashion is a fickle mistress. Only yesterday scientific rationality enjoyed considerable attention, consideration, and even reverence among phi losophers; "but today's fashion leads us to despise it, and the matron, rejected and abandoned as Hecuba, complains; modo maxima rerum, tot generis natisque potens - nunc trahor exui, inops", to cite Kant for our purpose, who cited Ovid for his. Like every fashion, ours also has its paradoxical aspects, as John Watkins correctly reminds in an essay in this volume. Enthusiasm for science was high among philosophers when significant scientific results were mostly a promise, it declined when that promise became an undeniable reality. Nevertheless, as with the decline of any fashion, even the revolt against scientific rationality has some reasonable grounds. If the taste of the philosophical community has changed so much, it is not due to an incident or a whim. This volume is not about the history of and reasons for this change. Instead, it provides a view of the new emerging image of scientific rationality in both its philosophical and historical aspects. In particular, the aim of the contributions gathered here is to focus on the concept around which the discussions about rationality have mostly taken place: scientific change
The discourses of science by Marcello Pera( Book )

15 editions published between 1991 and 1994 in 4 languages and held by 341 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this greatly anticipated revision and translation of Scienza e Retorica, Marcello Pera argues that rhetoric is central to the making of scientific knowledge. Pera begins with an attack on what he calls the "Cartesian syndrome," the fixation on method shared by supporters of both the "standard" and "new" philosophies of science. He argues that in linking scientific rationality to methodological rules, both sides get it wrong. Scientific knowledge is neither the mirror of nature provided by a universal method, nor a cultural construct imposed by subjective interests

Why we should call ourselves Christians : the religious roots of free societies by Marcello Pera( Book )

2 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 80 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The intellectual and political elite of the West is nowadays taking for granted that religion, in particular Christianity, is a cultural vestige, a primitive form of knowledge, a consolation for the poor minded, an obstacle to coexistence. In all influential environments, the widespread watchword is "We are all secular" or "We are all post-religious." As a consequence, we are told that states must be independent of religious creed, politics must take a neutral stance regarding religious values, and societies must hold together without any reference to religious bonds. Liberalism, which in some
