Fluid flows to black holes : a tribute to S. Chandrasekhar on his birth centenary by D. J Saikia( )

13 editions published between 2011 and 2012 in English and held by 1,419 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This unique book contains a biographical portrait, accounts of Chandrasekhar's role and impact on modern science, historical perspectives and personal reminiscences, several of which appeared in Physics Today, and reviews by leading experts in areas which Prof. Chandrasekhar pioneered. The reviews, which appeared in the Bulletin of the Astronomical Society of India, are either based on papers presented by scholars in the Chandrasekhar Centennial Symposium at the University of Chicago during 15-17 October 2010, or were additional reviews covering topics not represented at the conference by other distinguished astrophysicists. It provides a glimpse of some of the most exciting areas of modern astrophysics as a tribute to Prof Chandrasekhar on his birth centenary

Radiative transfer by S Chandrasekhar( Book )

43 editions published between 1950 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 982 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book by a Nobel Laureate provides the foundation for analysis of stellar atmospheres, planetary illumination, and sky radiation. Radiation transfer has been investigated as a phenomenon of astrophysics, and it has attained wider interest because of similar problems in the theory of neutron diffusion. Suitable for students and professionals in physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, and atmospheric studies. 1950 edition
The mathematical theory of black holes by S Chandrasekhar( Book )

38 editions published between 1982 and 2009 in English and Polish and held by 860 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The theory of black holes is the most simple consequence of Einstein's relativity theory. Dealing with relativity theory, this book details one of the most beautiful areas of mathematical physics; the theory of black holes. It represents a personal testament to the work of the author, who spent several years working-out the subject matter." --WorldCat
Truth and beauty : aesthetics and motivations in science by S Chandrasekhar( Book )

Newton's Principia for the common reader by S Chandrasekhar( Book )

32 editions published between 1995 and 2005 in English and Japanese and held by 810 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Representing a decade's work from a distinguished physicist, this is the first comprehensive analysis of Newton's Principia without recourse to secondary sources. Professor Chandrasekhar analyses some 150 propositions which form a direct chain leading to Newton's formulation of his universal law of gravitation. In each case, Newton's proofs are arranged in a linear sequence of equations and arguments, avoiding the need to unravel the necessarily convoluted style of Newton's connected prose. In almost every case, a modern version of the proofs is given to bring into sharp focus the beauty, clarity, and breathtaking economy of Newton's methods." "Professor Chandrasekhar's work is an attempt by a distinguished practising scientist to read and comprehend the enormous intellectual achievement of the Principia. This work will stimulate great interest and debate among the scientific community, illuminating the brilliance of Newton's work under the gaze of Chandrasekhar's rare perception."--Jacket

Ellipsoidal figures of equilibrium by S Chandrasekhar( Book )

24 editions published between 1969 and 1987 in 3 languages and held by 500 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Classical investigations on the ellipsoidal figures of equilibrium of liquid masses are here enlarged by Chandrasekhar into a complete theory. The author develops and completes the basic ideas put forth in three fundamental papers by Dirichlet, Dedekind, and Riemann over a century ago, which have been all but ignored since that time. The various problems are solved by a method and a technique that are essentially elementary, and a number of common misconceptions and errors are corrected. After a historical introduction, the author goes on to discuss virial equations of the various orders and to describe his new method; potentials of homogeneous and heterogeneous ellipsoids (including theorems on a class of heterogeneous ellipsoids which enable the treatment of the subject without explicit use of ellipsoidal harmonics); Dirichlet's problem and Dedekind's theorem; Maclaurin spheroids; Jacobi and Dedekind ellipsoid; Riemann ellipsoids; Roche ellipsoids (Including Darwin ellipsoids)
The theory of turbulence : Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar's 1954 lectures by S Chandrasekhar( )

14 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and held by 436 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In January 1937, Nobel laureate in Physics Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar was recruited to the University of Chicago. He was to remain there for his entire career, becoming Morton D. Hull Distinguished Service Professor of Theoretical Astrophysics in 1952 and attaining emeritus status in 1985. This is where his then student Ed Spiegel met him during the summer of 1954, attended his lectures on turbulence and jotted down the notes in hand. His lectures had a twofold purpose: they not only provided a very elementary introduction to some aspects of the subject for novices, they also allowed Chandra to organize his thoughts in preparation to formulating his attack on the statistical problem of homogeneous turbulence. After each lecture Ed Spiegel transcribed the notes and filled in the details of the derivations that Chandrasekhar had not included, trying to preserve the spirit of his presentation and even adding some of his side remarks. The lectures were rather impromptu and the notes as presented here are as they were set down originally in 1954. Now they are being made generally available for Chandrasekhar{u2019}s centennial
