Cinquante ans de polynômes = Fifty years of polynomials : proceedings of a conference held in honour of Alain Durand at the Institut Henri Poincaré, Paris, France, May 2627, 1988
by M Langevin
(
Book
)
19 editions published between 1989 and 1990 in 3 languages and held by 413 WorldCat member libraries worldwide Before his untimely death in 1986, Alain Durand had undertaken a systematic and indepth study of the arithmetic perspectives of polynomials. Four unpublished articles of his, formed the centerpiece of attention at a colloquium in Paris in 1988 and are reproduced in this volume together with 11 other papers on closely related topics. A detailed introduction by M. Langevin sets the scene and places these articles in a unified perspective
From number theory to physics
by Michel Waldschmidt
(
Book
)
18 editions published between 1992 and 1995 in English and German and held by 371 WorldCat member libraries worldwide Various developments in physics have involved many questions related to number theory, in an increasingly direct way. This trend is especially visible in two broad families of problems, namely, field theories, and dynamical systems and chaos. The 14 chapters of this book are extended, selfcontained versions of expository lecture courses given at a school on "Number Theory and Physics" held at Les Houches for mathematicians and physicists. Most go as far as recent developments in the field. Some adapt an original pedagogical viewpoint
Diophantine approximation on linear algebraic groups : transcendence properties of the exponential function in several variables
by Michel Waldschmidt
(
Book
)
13 editions published between 2000 and 2011 in English and held by 330 WorldCat member libraries worldwide The theory of transcendental numbers is closely related to the study of diophantine approximation. This book deals with values of the usual exponential function e^z. A central open problem is the conjecture on algebraic independence of logarithms of algebraic numbers. This book includes proofs of the main basic results (theorems of HermiteLindemann, GelfondSchneider, 6 exponentials theorem), an introduction to height functions with a discussion of Lehmer's problem, several proofs of Baker's theorem as well as explicit measures of linear independence of logarithms. An original feature is that proofs make systematic use of Laurent's interpolation determinants. The most general result is the socalled Theorem of the Linear Subgroup, an effective version of which is also included. It yields new results of simultaneous approximation and of algebraic independence. 2 chapters written by D. Roy provide complete and at the same time simplified proofs of zero estimates (due to P. Philippon) on linear algebraic groups

Number theory and physics : proceedings of the winter school, Les Houches, France, March 716, 1989
by J. M Luck
(
Book
)
9 editions published between 1990 and 1992 in English and German and held by 233 WorldCat member libraries worldwide The contributions to this book can be divided into two categories: those in which mathematicians write on problems relevant to theoretical physics, and those dealing with problems relevant to number theory, written by physicists. Many recent developments in theoretical physics display aspects related to number theory, and this cooperation will be furthered by this volume. The authors from each discipline have taken pains to present their contributions in a manner that is attractive and understandable to readers from the other discipline. The subjects covered include: modular forms and applications to quantum field theory for strings, number theoretical aspects of the spectra of operators applied to the Hall effect, quasicrystals, almost periodic systems, the Riemann zeta function, applications of number theory to dynamical systems, statistical mechanics, lattices, stochastic processes and integrable systems

Vistas of special functions
by Shigeru Kanemitsu
(
Book
)
1 edition published in 2007 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide This is a unique book for studying special functions through zetafunctions. Many important formulas of special functions scattered throughout the literature are located in their proper positions and readers get enlightened access to them in this book. The areas covered include: Bernoulli polynomials, the gamma function (the beta and the digamma function), the zetafunctions (the Hurwitz, the Lerch, and the Epstein zetafunction), Bessel functions, an introduction to Fourier analysis, finite Fourier series, Dirichlet Lfunctions, the rudiments of complex functions and summation formulas. The Fourier series for the (first) periodic Bernoulli polynomial is effectively used, familiarizing the reader with the relationship between special functions and zetafunctions
