Henri Julien fut un grand illustrateur québécois. Jean Saulnier aborde son oeuvre à partir d'un fait de la petite histoire de Montréal. À l'hiver 1871-72, la métropole, surprise par des froids hâtifs et persistants, manque de bois de chauffage. Ses citoyens les moins nantis, les Canadiens français et les Irlandais catholiques, souffrent cruellement de cette pénurie trop souvent mortelle. Voyant la possibilité de mettre en valeur son projet de Train du Nord, le curé Labelle vient à la rescousse des Montréalais. Deux personnages virtuels, Rosa Derina la cantatrice et Henri Julien le graveur, avec la connivence de Thierry Sauer, prêtent vie aux gravures d'actualité journalistique publiées à l'époque, témoignage visuel inestimable de la réalité historique, humaine et sociale du temps
