Complete score of Beethoven's only opera in one affordable volume, including all spoken German dialogue. Unabridged republication of the work as published by C.F. Peters, Leipzig, n.d
Fidelio, op. 72 by Ludwig van Beethoven( Recording )

23 editions published between 1978 and 2007 in German and No Linguistic content and held by 452 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Fidelio, Beethoven's only opera, was based on J.N. Bouilly's Léonore, ou L'amour conjugal, a rescue drama typical of the literature of the French Revolution. The story, possibly derived from a real incident, is a convoluted one, but its celebration of courage and idealism in the face of tyranny greatly appealed to the composer's personal values. The opera took a decade to reach its final form, and even though the work of the librettists in adapting the material left much to be desired -- Joseph Sonnleithner's rather turgid original efforts of 1805-1806 were only partially redeemed by the revisions of Georg Friedrich Treitschke in 1814 -- the end result, thanks to the extraordinary quality of the music, is one of the most powerful and moving operas ever written. - Disc 1 insert p. 3
