Variational methods : proceedings of a conference, Paris, June 1988 by H Berestycki( Book )

11 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 187 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the framework of the "Annee non lineaire" (the special nonlinear year) sponsored by the C.N.R.S. (the French National Center for Scien tific Research), a meeting was held in Paris in June 1988. It took place in the Conference Hall of the Ministere de la Recherche and had as an organizing theme the topic of "Variational Problems." Nonlinear analysis has been one of the leading themes in mathemat ical research for the past decade. The use of direct variational methods has been particularly successful in understanding problems arising from physics and geometry. The growth of nonlinear analysis is largely due to the wealth of ap plications from various domains of sciences and industrial applica tions. Most of the papers gathered in this volume have their origin in applications: from mechanics, the study of Hamiltonian systems, from physics, from the recent mathematical theory of liquid crystals, from geometry, relativity, etc. Clearly, no single volume could pretend to cover the whole scope of nonlinear variational problems. We have chosen to concentrate on three main aspects of these problems, organizing them roughly around the following topics: 1. Variational methods in partial differential equations in mathemat ical physics 2. Variational problems in geometry 3. Hamiltonian systems and related topics -- Provided by the publisher
Perspectives in nonlinear partial differential equations : in honor of Haïm Brezis( Book )

10 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 185 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In celebration of Haim Brezis's 60th birthday, a conference was held at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, with a program testifying to Brezis's wide-ranging influence on nonlinear analysis and partial differential equations. The articles in this volume are primarily from that conference. They present a rare view of the state of the art of many aspects of nonlinear PDEs, as well as describe new directions that are being opened up in this field. The articles, written by mathematicians at the center of current developments, provide somewhat more personal views of the important developments and challenges. In his own work, Brezis has been a seminal influence in many important areas: critical growth in semi-linear equations, variational analysis of functionals in borderline compactness cases, vector valued equations, the Ginzburg-Landau theory, as well as generalized degree theory and fine properties of Sobolev spaces. This same breadth is reflected in the mathematics in this collection. -- Book cover
Nonlinear PDE's in condensed matter and reactive flows by H Berestycki( Book )

14 editions published between 2002 and 2003 in English and held by 95 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Nonlinear partial differential equations abound in modern physics. The problems arising in these fields lead to fascinating questions and, at the same time, progress in understanding the mathematical structures is of great importance to the models. Nevertheless, activity in one of the approaches is not always sufficiently in touch with developments in the other field. The book presents the joint efforts of mathematicians and physicists involved in modelling reactive flows, in particular superconductivity and superfluidity. Certain contributions are fundamental to an understanding of such cutting-edge research topics as rotating Bose-Einstein condensates, Kolmogorov-Zakharov solutions for weak turbulence equations, and the propagation of fronts in heterogeneous media

QUELQUES PROBLEMES D'EQUATIONS AUX DERIVEES PARTIELLES ELLIPTIQUES NON LINEAIRES ET APPLICATIONS A DES MODELES EN SUPRACONDUCTIVITE ET EN COMBUSTION by Amandine Aftalion( Book )

1 edition published in 1997 in French and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

LES TRAVAUX PRESENTES DANS CETTE THESE PORTENT SUR CERTAINS PROBLEMES D'EQUATIONS AUX DERIVEES PARTIELLES ELLIPTIQUES NON LINEAIRES ET S'ORGANISENT AUTOUR DE TROIS THEMES PRINCIPAUX : LE MODELE DE GINZBURG ET LANDAU DES SUPRACONDUCTEURS, UN MODELE DE FLAMMES ET L'ETUDE DE PROPRIETES QUALITATIVES DE SOLUTIONS D'EDP ELLIPTIQUES. LA PREMIERE PARTIE EST CONSACREE A L'ETUDE DE QUELQUES PROBLEMES MATHEMATIQUES POUR LES SUPRACONDUCTEURS DE TYPE II, CARACTERISES PAR UN PARAMETRE DE GINZBURG-LANDAU GRAND. ON EST ALORS RAMENE A L'ETUDE ASYMPTOTIQUE DU COMPORTEMENT DES MINIMISEURS D'UNE FONCTIONNELLE D'ENERGIE, DEPENDANT DE , QUAND TEND VERS L'INFINI. LES DEUX GEOMETRIES ENVISAGEES, LA PLAQUE INFINIE ET LE CYLINDRE INFINI, PRESENTENT DES COMPORTEMENTS TRES DIFFERENTS. LA DEUXIEME PARTIE PORTE SUR L'ANALYSE D'UN MODELE DE COMBUSTION, LA FLAMME AVEC POINT DE STAGNATION : QUAND ON ENVOIE UN JET BIDIMENSIONNEL DE COMBUSTIBLE SUR UN MUR CHAUFFE, UNE FLAMME SE FORME AU VOISINAGE DE LA PLAQUE SI LA VITESSE DU JET N'EST PAS TROP GRANDE. IL S'AGIT D'ETUDIER MATHEMATIQUEMENT LE NOMBRE DE POSITIONS POSSIBLES POUR LE FRONT DE FLAMME EN FONCTION DE LA VITESSE INITIALE DU JET. DANS LA TROISIEME PARTIE SONT PRESENTES QUELQUES RESULTATS QUALITATIFS POUR DIVERSES CLASSES D'EDP ELLIPTIQUES. ON PROUVE EN PARTICULIER LA SYMETRIE DES SOLUTIONS DE PROBLEMES SURDETERMINES POSES DANS DIFFERENTS TYPES DE DOMAINES NON BORNES : DOMAINES EXTERIEURS ET CYLINDRES NOTAMMENT. ON ETUDIE ENFIN LA MULTIPLICITE DES SOLUTIONS D'EQUATIONS A DONNEE AU BORD SINGULIERE. DANS TOUS CES PROBLEMES, ON CHERCHE DES ESTIMATIONS A PRIORI ET DES THEOREMES DE COMPACITE. LES PRINCIPAUX OUTILS UTILISES SONT LE PRINCIPE DU MAXIMUM, LES METHODES DE SUR ET SOUS SOLUTIONS, DE DEPLACEMENT D'HYPERPLANS ET LA THEORIE DU DEGRE TOPOLOGIQUE

Equations aux dérivées partielles non-linéaires et ondes progressives by Sonia Sellami-Omrani( Book )

1 edition published in 1993 in French and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
