Nonlinear partial differential equations and their applications : Collège de France seminar by Seminar on Applied Mathematics( Book )

249 editions published between 1976 and 2002 in 5 languages and held by 1,215 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book contains the written versions of lectures delivered since 1997 in the well-known weekly seminar on Applied Mathematics at the Collège de France in Paris, directed by Jacques-Louis Lions. It is the 14th and last of the series, due to the recent and untimely death of Professor Lions. The texts in this volume deal mostly with various aspects of the theory of nonlinear partial differential equations. They present both theoretical and applied results in many fields of growing importance such as Calculus of variations and optimal control, optimization, system theory and control, operations research, fluids and continuum mechanics, nonlinear dynamics, meteorology and climate, homogenization and material science, numerical analysis and scientific computations The book is of interest to everyone from postgraduate, who wishes to follow the most recent progress in these fields. Analyse fonctionnelle : théorie et applications by H Brézis( Book )

45 editions published between 1983 and 2010 in 3 languages and held by 579 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ginzburg-Landau vortices by Fabrice Bethuel( Book )

29 editions published between 1994 and 2005 in English and held by 357 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The GinzburgLandau equation as a mathematical model of superconductors has become an extremely useful tool in many areas of physics where vortices carrying a topological charge appear. The remarkable progress in the mathematical understanding of this equation involves a combined use of mathematical tools from many branches of mathematics. The GinzburgLandau model has been an amazing source of new problems and new ideas in analysis, geometry and topology. This collection will meet the urgent needs of the specialists, scholars and graduate students working in this area or related areas

Functional analysis, Sobolev spaces and partial differential equations by H Brézis( Book )

12 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and held by 213 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Uniquely, this book presents a coherent, concise and unified way of combining elements from two distinct "worlds," functional analysis (FA) and partial differential equations (PDEs), and is intended for students who have a good background in real analysis. This text presents a smooth transition from FA to PDEs by analyzing in great detail the simple case of one-dimensional PDEs (i.e., ODEs), a more manageable approach for the beginner. Although there are many books on functional analysis and many on PDEs, this is the first to cover both of these closely connected topics. Moreover, the wealth of exercises and additional material presented, leads the reader to the frontier of research
Perspectives in nonlinear partial differential equations : in honor of Haïm Brezis( Book )

7 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 191 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In celebration of Haim Brezis's 60th birthday, a conference was held at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, with a program testifying to Brezis's wide-ranging influence on nonlinear analysis and partial differential equations. The articles in this volume are primarily from that conference. They present a rare view of the state of the art of many aspects of nonlinear PDEs, as well as describe new directions that are being opened up in this field. The articles, written by mathematicians at the center of current developments, provide somewhat more personal views of the important developments and challenges. In his own work, Brezis has been a seminal influence in many important areas: critical growth in semi-linear equations, variational analysis of functionals in borderline compactness cases, vector valued equations, the Ginzburg-Landau theory, as well as generalized degree theory and fine properties of Sobolev spaces. This same breadth is reflected in the mathematics in this collection. -- Book cover
Elliptic and parabolic problems : a special tribute to the work of Haim Brezis by H Brézis( Book )

12 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 85 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The present volume is dedicated to celebrate the work of the renowned mathematician Herbert Amann, who had a significant and decisive influence in shaping Nonlinear Analysis. Most articles published in this book, which consists of 32 articles in total, written by highly distinguished researchers, are in one way or another related to the scientific works of Herbert Amann. The contributions cover a wide range of nonlinear elliptic and parabolic equations with applications to natural sciences and engineering. Special topics are fluid dynamics, reaction-diffusion systems, bifurcation theory, maximal regularity, evolution equations, and the theory of function spaces
Nonlinear evolution equations and related topics : dedicated to Philippe Bénilan by Wolfgang Arendt( Book )

12 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 81 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Philippe Benilan was a most original and charismatic mathematician who had a deep and decisive impact on the theory of Nonlinear Evolution Equations. This present volume is dedicated to him and contains research papers written by highly distinguished mathematicians. They are all related to Benilan's work and reflect the present state of this most active field. The contributions cover a wide range of nonlinear and linear equations. Special topics include: Hamilton-Jacobi equations, the porous medium equation, reaction diffusion systems, integro-differential equations and visco-elasticity, maximal regularity for elliptic and parabolic equations, and the Ornstein Uhlenbeck operator. Also in this special volume, the legendary work of Benilan-Brezis on Thomas-Fermi Theory is published for the first time

Analysis and continuum mechanics : a collection of papers dedicated to J. Serrin on his sixtieth birthday by S. S Antman( Book )

3 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The 39 papers in this collection are devoted mostly to the exact mathematical analysis of problems in continuum mechanics, but also to problems of a purely mathematical nature mainly connected to partial differential equations from continuum physics. All the papers are dedicated to J. Serrin and were originally published in the "Archive of Rational Mechanics and Analysis."
