The art of Romare Bearden by Romare Bearden( Book )

14 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 1,018 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Romare Bearden (1911-1988) was one of America's great artistic innovators, blazing his own trail in a time of turbulent cultural change. While his work offers an invaluable view of mid-twentieth-century African-American experience, it has also come to occupy a significant place in the wider history of American art and speaks to the universal concerns of artists everywhere." "Born in North Carolina and coming of age in Harlem during the Harlem Renaissance, Bearden was surrounded from an early age by writers, musicians, artists, and intellectuals who presided over an extraordinary period of creative ferment. With keen aesthetic sensitivity, the insight of a philosopher, and the courage of a pioneer, Bearden absorbed images and ideas that he later wove into his colorful, complex, and imaginative art. His work is infused with the sounds, intervals, and rhythms of jazz and the blues; the majesty and mystery of popular religion and obscure ritual; echoes of European old master painting and African art; and the atmosphere of the places he loved." "In addition to reproducing examples of Bearden's well-known collages, photostats, and watercolors, The Art of Romare Bearden includes paintings in gouache and oil, murals, book illustrations, costume designs, and his only known sculpture. Much of this art has been culled from private collections and is rarely seen. Fine's definitive essay, based on new research, is accompanied by shorter essays on the artist's European and African sources, his own writings, and contemporary criticism of his art."--Jacket

Thirty-five years at Crown Point Press : making prints, doing art by Karin Breuer( Book )

9 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 562 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Crown Point Press, under the direction of Kathan Brown, is renowned for its use of the oldest, most traditional printmaking processes, etching and woodcut, in radically nontraditional ways. With painters, sculptors, and performance and conceptual artists - many of whom had never before made prints - the Press has produced works as varied as Tom Marioni's tracing of the sun's reflection on a copper plate and figurative images carved on woodblocks by traditional printmaking masters in Japan and China. During the past thirty-five years, Crown Point Press printed and published important Minimalist and Conceptual graphics as well as the significant prints of Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud. The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco in 1991 brought the Archive of this great fine art publisher into its collection. Over 200 of these prints are illustrated in color in this book, which offers insight into the creative processes of the artists and candidly describes the development of the Press and the ways it helped transform the printmaking landscape of the twentieth century

The art of Romare Bearden( Visual )

2 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 369 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Romare Bearden's art captures the diversity and richness of his life. With roots in North Carolina, Bearden migrated North at an early age, living in industrial Pittsburgh, vibrant Harlem, and, later in his life, on the Caribbean island of St. Martin. These four locales and his memories of their people, music, colors, and stories form the basis of Bearden's collages and paintings, whose style exhibits a unique blend of cultural influences from Harlem, Europe, and Africa. This film traces Bearden's entire career, including his paintings and watercolors of the 1940s, experimental collages of 1964, mature collages of the next two decades, large-scale public murals, and late landscapes. The documentary also features commentary by art historians, artists, and others who knew Bearden, including Wynton Marsalis, Albert Murray, and Emma Amos."--Container
