Phylogenetics : the theory and practice of phylogenetic systematics by E. O Wiley( Book )

62 editions published between 1981 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,689 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The long-awaited revision of the industry standard on phylogenetics Since the publication of the first edition of this landmark volume more than twenty-five years ago, phylogenetic systematics has taken its place as the dominant paradigm of systematic biology. It has profoundly influenced the way scientists study evolution, and has seen many theoretical and technical advances as the field has continued to grow. It goes almost without saying that the next twenty-five years of phylogenetic research will prove as fascinating as the first, with many exciting developments yet to come. This new edition of Phylogenetics captures the very essence of this rapidly evolving discipline. Written for the practicing systematist and phylogeneticist, it addresses both the philosophical and technical issues of the field, as well as surveys general practices in taxonomy. Major sections of the book deal with the nature of species and higher taxa, homology and characters, trees and tree graphs, and biogeography--the purpose being to develop biologically relevant species, character, tree, and biogeographic concepts that can be applied fruitfully to phylogenetics. The book then turns its focus to phylogenetic trees, including an in-depth guide to tree-building algorithms. Additional coverage includes: Parsimony and parsimony analysis Parametric phylogenetics including maximum likelihood and Bayesian approaches Phylogenetic classification Critiques of evolutionary taxonomy, phenetics, and transformed cladistics Specimen selection, field collecting, and curating Systematic publication and the rules of nomenclature Providing a thorough synthesis of the field, this important update to Phylogenetics is essential for students and researchers in the areas of evolutionary biology, molecular evolution, genetics and evolutionary genetics, paleontology, physical anthropology, and zoology." -- Publisher
Evolution as entropy : toward a unified theory of biology by D. R Brooks( Book )

25 editions published between 1986 and 1995 in English and held by 1,134 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This second edition in just two years offers a considerably revised second chapter, in which information behavior replaces analogies to purely physical systems, as well as practical applications of the authors' theory. Attention is also given to a hierarchical theory of ecosystem behavior, taking note of constraints on local ecosystem members resul
Phylogenetic analysis and paleontology : proceedings of a symposium entitled "Phylogenetic models," convened at the North American Paleontological Convention II, Lawrence, Kansas, August 8, 1977 by North American Paleontological Convention( Book )

3 editions published in 1979 in English and held by 469 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Studies how phylogenetic analysis is important in paleontology and that attempts to systematize fossil species should be based on an analysis of phylogenetic history
The Zoogeography of North American freshwater fishes( Book )

12 editions published between 1985 and 1986 in English and held by 419 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Zoogeography of North American Freshwater Fishes is a timely, authoritative monograph which serves a twofold purpose. First, it discusses the distribution of North American freshwater fish throughout the continent. It then attempts to explain these observed distribution patterns and develops a theory for the dispersal and evolution of these fishes through historical drainage alterations, plate tectonics, and Pleistoscene glaciation. The Zoogeography of North American Freshwater Fishes is a comprehensive treatment of the freshwater biogeography of North America, with implications for other disciplines. It stresses the intimate relationship between geological changes in the landscape on fish dispersal and evolution. For biologists, geologists, and geographers actively involved in biogeography, this book serves as a valuable-and practical-reference

Fundulus blairae, a new species of the Fundulus nottii complex (Teleostei, Cyprinodontidae) by E. O Wiley( Book )

1 edition published in 1975 in English and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Fundulus blairae is described from material from eastern Texas, southeastern Oklahoma, and western Louisiana. A phylogenetic analysis indicates that F. blairae is a member of the Fundulus nottii species group and is most closely related to F. dispar. The analysis also indicates that F. cingulatus is most closely related to the F. nottii species group. Fundulus nottii and F. lineolatus, the other members of the species group, are sympatric with each other, whereas F. dispar and F. blairae are allopatric, both with each other and with the other two species. A phylogeny of the F. nottii complex and three other species of Fundulus is presented"--P. [1]
