L'origine del libro è nel ciclo di lezioni, che muovendo dai mosaici cristiani si concludeva con Cézanne, tenuto nel 1914 dal critico, giovanissimo e appena laureato, per gli studenti dei licei Tasso e Visconti a Roma, dove frequentava il perfezionamento sotto la guida del Venturi. Ma in quelle pagine scritte in due torride settimane estive come manualetto preparatorio per la 'maturità' dei suoi allievi, c'è già intero il maestro della critica d'arte del Novecento. Ancora oggi utilissimo come compendio di storia dell'arte grazie all'impostazione didattica e alle numerose illustrazioni, il libro è anche un'occasione per chi voglia familiarizzare con il maestro della critica d'arte del Novecento

Pionnier de la redécouverte de Caravage (1571 - 1610), Roberto Longhi (Alba, 1890 - Florence, 1970) est l'une des figures les plus fortes de l'histoire de l'art italien du XXe siècle. Son regard d'expert et d'historien s'est posé sur les grands primitifs, comme Giotto (vers 1266/67 - 1337), Masolino (1383 - vers 1440), Masaccio (1401 - vers 1428), ou Piero della Francesca (vers 1415 - 1492), comme sur Caravage. Esprit ouvert sur son temps, proche des artistes contemporains tel Morandi (1890 - 1964), il a permis grâce à ses études, une lecture renouvelée des grands moments de la peinture italienne. À partir d'une sélection de chefs-d'oeuvre, le musée Jacquemart André célébrera, de mars à juillet 2015, les passions italiennes de Roberto Longhi. Le catalogue mettra en lumière deux axes forts des études Longhi : les primitifs italiens et Caravage et les caravagesques. 0L'ouvrage de l'exposition s'ouvrira sur une section consacrée aux oeuvres de Caravage dont le célèbre Jeune garçon mordu par un lézard de la Fondation Roberto Longhi.
