Computer security in distributed systems by Butler W Lampson ( Visual )
5 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 59 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The basic services for building a secure computer system are authentication, authorization, and auditing; they are hard to implement in a distributed system. This lecture describes how to set up secure communication channels using encryption, establish a hierarchy of servers to authenticate the users of these channels, grant access to the authorized users listed on each object, and record each step in an audit trail

REFERENCE MANUAL: TIME-SHARING SYSTEM ( Book )
2 editions published between 1967 and 1968 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Berkeley Time-Sharing System is divided into three major parts: The monitor, the executive, and the subsystems. Only the first two of these are discussed in detail in this manual. The manual attempts to describe exhaustively all the features of the monitor and in addition to give a number of implementation details. It also describes those features of the executive which can be invoked by a program. The word monitor is used to refer to that portion of the system which is concerned with scheduling, input-output, interrupt processing, memory allocation and swapping, and the control of active programs. The executive, on the other hand, is concerned with the control of the directory of symbolic file names and backup storage for these files, and various miscellaneous matters. Other parts of the executive handle the command language by which the user controls the system from his teletype, the identification of users and specification of the limits of their access to the system. A description of the Cedar language : a Cedar language reference manual by Butler W Lampson ( Book )

A naming service for a world-wide computer network by Butler W Lampson ( Visual )
2 editions published in 1987 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A naming service maps a name of a person or machine, and assigns properties such as address and passwords. A distributed computing system uses this to locate resources, address mail, and authenticate entities. Made available, this will allow the name space to grow and reorganize, keep faults from spreading, and handle billions of names worldwide
Scheduling and protection in an interactive multi-processor system by Butler W Lampson ( Book )

QSPL REFERENCE MANUAL by Berkeley University of California ( Book )
2 editions published between 1967 and 1969 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The document is a brief but complete description of a new language invented and implemented by the authors. The language is intended to be a suitable vehicle for programs which would otherwise be written in machine language for reasons of efficiency or flexibility. It is part of a system which also includes a compiler capable of producing reasonably efficient object code and a runtime which implements the input-output and string-handling features of the language as well as a fairly elaborate storage allocator. The system automatically takes care of paging arrays and blocks from the drum if they have been so declared
