Letters from Burma by Aung San Suu Kyi( Book )

11 editions published between 1997 and 2000 in 4 languages and held by 496 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"For the last decade of Burma's traumatic history, Aung San Suu Kyi - winner of the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize - has been the inspirational leader of attempts to restore democracy to her country. In these fifty-two pieces, originally written for a Japanese newspaper and begun soon after her release from house arrest, she paints a vivid, poignant yet fundamentally optimistic picture of her native land." "She evokes the country's seasons and scenery, customs and festivities, and describes an inspirational pilgrimage to the Buddhist abbot of Thamanya. She celebrates the courageous army officers, academics and actors who have supported the National League for Democracy, often at great personal risk, and she sets out a comprehensive programme for economic reform. A passionate advocate of better health care and education, and the need for ethical foreign investment in Burma's future, Aung San Suu Kyi reveals an acute insight into the impact of political decisions on ordinary people's lives. She examines the terrible traumas inflicted on children of imprisoned dissidents - children allowed to see their parents for fifteen minutes every fortnight - the effect of inflation on the national diet and of state repression on traditions of hospitality."--Jacket

2 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 85 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Into the Current tells the story of Burma's unsung heroes - its prisoners of conscience - and the price they pay for speaking truth to power in a military dictatorship. Using footage secretly shot in Burma, the film uncovers the stories and sacrifices of 'ordinary' people of exceptional courage, and the leaders who inspire them. Former political prisoner Bo Kyi and an underground team work tirelessly and often at great risk on behalf of their 2,100 jailed colleagues. While they and countless others fight on, the dream of a free Burma remains alive

Interview with Aung San Suu Kyi - a historical political manifestation. Politics, democracy and human rights became her call in life, when she returned to Burma. Driven by her father's history as a known reform politician, she created a political party and won by a landslide election in 1992. She was shortly thereafter imprisoned and put in house arrest for what turned out to be 15 years. The feature offers an exclusive interview with Aung San Suu Kyi, which not only covers her personal and political fight for democracy, but also her personal costs. The feature also includes a unique reportage on young Burmesians fight against the regime, thirdly a reportage covering the consequences of the Western economical sanctions with ASSK featuring two leading politicians from the opposition, and fourthly a feature on the election and oppositional criticism on ASSKs party neglecting to run for parliament

The voice of hope by Aung San Suu Kyi( Book )

12 editions published between 1997 and 2011 in English and Korean and held by 24 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Aung San Suu Kyi, Nobel Prize Laureate, mother of two, and devout Buddhist, is one of the most inspiring examples of spiritually infused politics and fearless leadership that the world has ever seen. Daughter of the martyred Burmese national hero who negotiated Burma's independence from Britain in the 1940s, Aung San Suu Kyi led the pro-democracy movement in Burma in 1988. The movement was quickly and brutally crushed by the military junta, and Aung San Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest

Dossier noir Birmanie : Autour d'une enquête d'Alan Clements by Alan Clements( Book )

1 edition published in 1993 in French and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

(Editore)
