48 fugues for Frank by Michael Kieran Harvey( )

2 editions published in 2010 and held by 234 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Performed by Michael Kieran Harvey, and complemented by Lingua Franka - concrete poetry by Arjun von Caemmerer, 48 Fugues for Frank premiered in 2010. A labor of love for Zappaphiles and anyone else with an interest in advanced music, innovative poetry and artistic vision. Each of the ten pieces uses four or five ideas inspired by, reacting to, or developing some of Zappa's signature techniques. "Frank Zappa was a great man. Through his lyrics he skewered hypocrisy whether religious, social, artistic or corporate. During the '80s he took on the American religious right and the government of Ronnie Ray-gun, testified to the US congress including Tipper and Al Gore on the issue of rock censorship and blasted the hypocrisy of Baptist preachers such as Swaggart, at the same time winning Grammy awards for albums with titles such as Jazz From Hell. He was a personal friend of democracy heroes like Vaclav Havel (who also had the courage to confront the other major censoring religion of Communism). At the time of his death in 1993 Zappa was working on an ambitious project called Civilization Phaze III which used Dada and concrete poetry techniques to evoke a world not so much post-apocalyptic as post-human toilet. A perennial thorn in the side of the establishment, he stood up for humanism and rationalism, and his music reflects both extreme rigour and freedom. No teenager would ever consider self harm after listening to Zappa's Suicide Chump just as any remotely religious leaning thinking person would hang their head in shame after listening to his rap, the first on vinyl, Dumb all Over."

No commercial potential : the saga of Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention by David Walley( Book )

2 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

For nearly thirty years Frank Zappa (1940-1993) pursued an idiosyncratic but influential course in music - rock, jazz, and classical composer (releasing over fifty albums); founder of the Mothers of Invention; guitarist, conductor, and producer; as well as social satirist, sonic scientist, First Amendment champion, and all-around iconoclast. This updated edition of David Walley's cutting-edge classic includes a new foreword, a substantial chapter carrying the Zappa saga through his death from cancer, an afterword, bibliography, discography, videography, and guide to Zappa on the Internet. From 1960's Freak Out! to the posthumous Civilization Phaze III, No Commercial Potential offers converts and connoisseurs the most practical and penetrating book ever written on the musical phenomenon known as Frank Zappa

Freak out! : my life with Frank Zappa by Pauline Butcher( Book )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1967, 21-year-old Pauline Butcher was working for a London secretarial agency when one evening a call came through from a Mr Frank Zappa asking for a typist to come to his hotel room. The assignment would change her life forever. After this chance encounter with the charismatic musician, at Frank's request Pauline moved with him, his family and his band the Mothers of Invention to a log cabin in the Hollywood Hills. There, the straight young English girl from Twickenham spent her days in the company of a succession of famous names, mixing with Oscar winners and rock royalty, including Mick Jagger, Marianne Faithfull, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Captain Beefheart and Tiny Tim. Often working nights and sleeping days, for three years Pauline served as Zappa's secretary, running his fan club, the United Mutations, and organising rehearsals, live appearances and recording sessions for the GTOs (Girls Together Outrageously), an all-female rock act supported and produced by Zappa. Freak Out! is the captivating story of a naive young English girl thrust into the mad world of a musical legend. A vivid depiction of the late sixties rock'n'roll scene and the stark realities behind Hollywood's perceived glamour, this memoir is also the most revealing and intimate portrait of Frank Zappa ever written."--Publisher's description
