According to Greek legend, Theseus returned from war on Crete to become King of Athens and took Phedre, the daughter of the vanquished King Minos, to be his wife. Phedre fell in love with the King's son, Hippolyte, but he did not return her love. Phedre caused the King to be wrongly jealous of his son and prayed to Neptune to destroy him. Hippolyte was killed by a sea monster and Phedre killed herself in remorse

Invention due à Talbot ainsi qu'au Français Hippolyte Bayard, le terme de calotype signifie " belle image " et désigne les tirages sur papier issus de négatifs également sur papier. Avec son léger flou dû à de longs temps de pose, ses tirages aux teintes variées et ses retouches, le calotype a la force de la gravure et du dessin. Il a produit une grande partie des chefs-d'œuvre de la photographie du XIXe s., comme Le Styrge de Charles Nègre ou Les Remparts d'Avignon d'Édouard Denis Baldus. Cette monographie de référence rassemble quelque 180 œuvres issues des collections de la BnF, de la Société française de photographie, du musée d'Orsay, du musée des Arts décoratifs, de la bibliothèque de l'Institut de France etpropose, à côté d'essais dus aux meilleurs spécialistes, qui situent l'importance du calotype dans l'histoire du médium photographique, le dictionnaire de plus de 350 photographes ayant pratiqué le calotype
