Desert queen : the extraordinary life of Gertrude Bell, adventurer, adviser to kings, ally of Lawrence of Arabia by Janet Wallach( Book )

41 editions published between 1996 and 2006 in 3 languages and held by 2,038 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Reared in the comfortable and privileged world of the "eminent Victorians," Gertrude Bell turned her back on convention and sought adventure in Arab lands. Traveling numerous times through the Syrian Desert and, at risk to her life, through the great Arabian desert of the Nejd - the last European to do so before the eruption of World War I - she wrote of her travels in widely acclaimed books. The trust she earned among the Arab sheikhs and chieftains made her indispensable when war broke out; recruited by British intelligence, she played a crucial role in obtaining the loyalty of Arab leaders, and her connections and information provided the brain for T.E. Lawrence's military brawn. To cap off this amazing career, she participated in the postwar peace conferences as a major architect of the modern Middle East, helping to found the state of Iraq and installing its dashing monarch, to whom she was an intimate adviser. In her lifetime, she was known as the most powerful woman in the British Empire

Chanel : her style and her life by Janet Wallach( Book )

11 editions published between 1998 and 1999 in English and German and held by 585 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"When she realized that the great love of her life, shipping and coal magnate Arthur "Boy" Capel, wouldn't marry a courtesan, Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel settled for his backing in business and opened her first high-fashion shop. According to Wallach's pictorial biography, such pragmatism characterized Chanel throughout her life, as each of her many famous lovers?Igor Stravinsky, Grand Duke Dimitri Pavlovich and the Duke of Westminster among them?helped her with money, influence or, at the very least, access to a smashing personal wardrobe. Profuse, if sometimes redundant, illustrations chronicle the canny Frenchwoman's progress from fashion iconoclast to couture icon. Wallach earnestly details the designer's innovations: Chanel popularized the jersey and cardigan and pants for women; legitimized costume jewelry; invented the "little black dress"; developed the ubiquitous, eponymous suit, as well as her trademark fragrance, Chanel No. 5. But as biography, the book offers little more than a list of Chanel's accomplishments and acquaintances. Wallach's (Desert Queen) text is variously silly, sentimental and strangely unidiomatic ("her modest means could never match their well-heeled bank accounts"). Some of the more intriguing details, involving the designer's failure in Hollywood and her romantic and financial connections with the Nazis, suggest a complex, calculating, passionate woman. But the book's most telling moments ultimately don't tell enough about the woman who more or less invented the modern fashion industry. 150 photos and illustrations."--Review From Publishers Weekly, Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc

The whole world is watching as the Middle East meets at the conference table. The names and faces on the Israeli team are familiar, but who are the Palestinian negotiators and where did they come from? John and Janet Wallach, American journalists with extraordinary access and credentials, have written a thoughtful examination of this emerging generation of leaders. The Wallachs examine the complex dynamics that cause the new Palestinians to be profoundly affected by Israeli society, even as they oppose the Israeli government. Here are the profiles of twelve Palestinians poised to inherit the leadership of a future Palestinian government. From Hanan Ashrawi, whose eloquence and credentials as a university professor have caused some to see her as the Golda Meir of the Palestinians; to Faisal Husseini, a childhood protege of Yassar Arafat and scion of one of the most elite Palestinian families; to Zahira Kamal, founder of the Women's Work Committee and a new breed of Arab woman; to Ziad Abu Zayyad, an influential Palestinian journalist - here are the ones to watch
