La ronde by Max Ophuls ( Visual )
12 editions published between 1950 and 2012 in French and held by 500 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
La Ronde translates as 'the round' which can refer to the policeman's beat, a circle of dancers, or a carousel, all of which this circular collection of interconnected short stories resembles. Each scene is built around a specific pair, and when one member of the pair breaks away from his or her lover, he or she then moves on to the next, introducing the partner that will lead on to the next pair, and so on until we are back where we started. Many of these lovers are seeking something they've lost in arms that look familiar but that belong to strangers. La ronde is the bittersweet note sounded by the circular nostalgia of the heart
Fanfan la Tulipe by Christian-Jaque ( Visual )
31 editions published between 1951 and 2013 in 6 languages and held by 314 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Charming rogue Fanfan flits from one adventure to the other after evading marriage by joining the army in the midst of the Seven Years' War. He's motivated less by patriotism than by a consultation with Adeline, a voluptuous phony fortuneteller who promises that he will find glory in the army, even win the hand of King Louis XV's daughter. Herself the daughter of a recruiting sergeant, Adeline is a charlatan, but the irrepressible Fanfan sets about fulfilling his "destiny," even as his would-be soothsayer finds herself falling in love with him. Flirting and fighting, trouble reliably finds Fanfan, who just as reliably evades it
Le petit prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry ( Recording )
50 editions published between 1954 and 2012 in 4 languages and held by 220 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
