"Le vaste bosquet du Labyrinthe de Versailles qui orna le parc voulu par Louis XIV ne vécut qu'un peu plus de cent ans mais suscita autant d'engouement lors de sa création que de curiosité après sa disparition. Cette création singulière d'André Le Nôtre, dont l'année 2013 marque le quatre-centième anniversaire de la mort, montre un aspect méconnu de l'oeuvre de l'illustre jardinier, créateur du "jardin à la française", par le tracé irrégulier et asymétrique de ses allées. Inspiré par Charles Perrault, l'immortel auteur des Contes, le Labyrinthe de Versailles est un chef-d'oeuvre tant de l'art des jardins que de la sculpture et de la gravure ; un parcours récréatif, moral, galant, plein d'"heureuses surprises", emmenait le visiteur privilégié à la rencontre d'un véritable bestiaire de plomb, trente-neuf fontaines composées d'un exceptionnel ensemble de sculptures animalières richement colorées, illustrant les fables d'Ésope. La Bibliothèque de Versailles, où l'on aime se perdre dans les allées du savoir, est le lieu rêvé pour présenter une exposition consacrée au thème du Labyrinthe, et plus particulièrement à celui de Versailles. Ses sources d'inspiration multiples, sa place singulière dans l'histoire des jardins, son influence, en font bien plus qu'un simple bosquet, presque un mythe. Les variations sur le thème du labyrinthe entraînent ainsi visiteur et lecteur dans un parcours à travers toutes les formes d'art, des origines de la pensée humaine au XXIe siècle, des jardins aux jeux vidéo, de la spiritualité à la littérature, du mythe au jeu."--Page 4 of cover
